On the Metro, in the aging tunnels near Park Kultury, a section built in 1935 is already showing dangerous signs of structural strain. One tunnel night crawler, Sergeitch Sergey Sosnovsky, notices water seeping into the tunnel that runs beneath the Moscow River and informs the assistant station master, who brushes off the concern and jokes that it’s only groundwater. Meanwhile, Irina Garina Svetlana Khodchenkova is torn between her lover, businessman Vladislav Konstantinov Anatoliy Belyy, and her husband, surgeon Andrei Garin Sergey Puskepalis. Konstantinov tries to pressure Irina to divorce Andrei, setting the stage for a love triangle that will collide with catastrophe. Arriving from abroad, Irina spends the night with Konstantinov rather than going home, while Andrei must escort their daughter Ksenia Garin Anfisa Vistingauzen to school, though a misstep leads them to take the “Garden” station by coincidence.

As the day unfolds, Sergeitch shares a drink with Galina Elena Panova by the Garden, recalling that the water leaking into the tunnel carried a faint, slime-tinged scent that cannot be groundwater. The police detain them for drinking in public, but Galina slips away and escapes into the subway, leaving Sergeitch to plead for a phone to warn the dispatcher—only to be ignored. In the tunnel, water pours from the ceiling as a train bearing Garin, Konstantinov, and Galina arrives and the driver hits the emergency brake. The train derails, plowing into water and debris; several passengers lose their lives. Konstantinov crawls onto the car roof to survive, while Garin searches for Ksenia among the wreckage, and Konstantinov warns him that the conductor rail remains live. The water level climbs, a short circuit cuts power, and those who stay in the flooded zone die.

Garin, Konstantinov, Galina, courier Michael Stanislav Duzhnikov, and a pair, Denis Istomin Aleksey Bardukov and Alisa Katerina Shpitsa, scramble toward a passage leading to a maintenance shaft. Michael, terrified, hesitates at the exit and dies when the carriage rolls over. From the passage, they drop into a small, abandoned bunker built during the subway’s construction; above them, a vertical shaft ends in a sewer grate they cannot reach, and their mobile phones are useless underwater. As the water rises higher, tension grows between Garin and Konstantinov, who resents Garin’s questions about his relationship with Irina. When they finally manage to call Irina, they only manage to tell her that they are trapped in the bunker; they press against the bars of the shaft, hoping for rescue, but the flood’s pressure tears off the train head and the water level drops again, pulling the survivors back into the tunnel.

The survivors reach the ghost station Borodino near the Garden and regain their strength on the platform. Garin drops hints to Konstantinov that he suspects the two lovers’ involvement, and the two men clash, with Konstantinov nearly drowning again. In the flooded tunnel, the overhead arch collapses and water fills the space; the rescue team manages to shut off the water tap, but the group eventually returns to the bunker and makes it out onto the street through the bars. Alisa and Denis leave the hospital together, while Garin and Irina confront each other in a tense moment, with Garin implicitly shutting Irina’s appeals down. The film closes with Konstantinov driving in circles after the ambulance carrying Garin, leaving the future of the relationships unresolved and underscoring a city that keeps moving even as lives are forever altered by a sudden, catastrophic flood.

Q1

Why does Irina spend the night with Konstantinov instead of going home?

A.

Irina arrives from abroad and chooses to spend the night with her lover Vlad Konstantinov rather than returning to her husband Andrei Garin. She is torn between her affection for Konstantinov and her family obligations, creating the emotional conflict that underlies the entire disaster scenario.

Earlier scenes establish Irina's internal struggle between her husband and her lover, showing her emotional conflict before the tunnel collapse forces them all together.

Q2

What causes the Metro tunnel to collapse?

A.

Water from the Moscow River begins seeping through the aging tunnel structure built in 1935. Sergeitch notices the leak and smells a slime-like scent indicating it's not ordinary groundwater, but the assistant station master dismisses his warning. The water pressure eventually causes the tunnel to collapse and flood.

Sergeitch's warning about the unusual water smell and the structural weakness of the 1935 tunnel section establishes the disaster's cause well before the collapse.

Q3

Why does Garin suspect Konstantinov's relationship with Irina?

A.

Andrei Garin suspects the affair between his wife Irina and Konstantinov because of Irina's emotional conflict and her choice to spend the night with Konstantinov instead of coming home. During the crisis, Garin drops hints to Konstantinov about knowing about their relationship, creating tense confrontations underground.

The initial scenes showing Irina's dilemma and Konstantinov pressuring her to divorce Andrei establish the knowledge that Garin eventually demonstrates.

Q4

What happens to Michael the courier during the escape?

A.

Michael the courier hesitates at the maintenance shaft exit, too terrified to move forward with the others. While he stays behind with his carriage, the train car rolls over and kills him. His death illustrates how panic and hesitation can be fatal in disaster situations.

Michael's fearful demeanor and hesitation during the escape setup his tragic fate in the tunnel.

Q5

Why does the water level rise and fall in the tunnel?

A.

The water level fluctuates throughout the crisis. It rises as flooding continues from the tunnel breach. At one point, the pressure of the water tears off the train head (the front carriage), which temporarily causes the water level to drop. However, the overhead arch eventually collapses, flooding the tunnel again before rescuers shut off the water supply.

The continuous water flow from the damaged tunnel and the structural instability of the underground passages foreshadow these fluctuations.

Q6

How do the survivors escape from the bunker?

A.

The survivors squeeze into a small underground bunker connected to a maintenance shaft. They cannot reach the sewer grate above them, and their phones don't work underground. Eventually, the rescue team manages to shut off the water tap, allowing the group to return to the bunker and push through the bars to reach the street surface.

The initial failed escape attempt and the survivors' repeated efforts to find a way out set up their eventual successful escape.

Q7

What is the significance of the Borodino ghost station?

A.

The survivors reach Borodino, an abandoned 'ghost station' that was part of Moscow Metro's construction history. This location serves as a brief respite where they regain strength on the platform. It is here that Garin confronts Konstantinov about the affair, leading to a physical confrontation where Konstantinov nearly drowns.

The existence of abandoned stations in Moscow's metro system establishes the possibility of finding refuge in unexpected places.

Q8

Why does Konstantinov nearly drown during the confrontation?

A.

At the Borodino ghost station, Garin hints at knowing about Konstantinov's relationship with Irina, triggering a violent confrontation between the two men. During the struggle, Konstantinov is pushed into the water and nearly drowns before being pulled out. This moment combines the personal emotional conflict with the physical danger of their situation.

The growing tension between Garin and Konstantinov throughout their underground ordeal builds to this explosive confrontation.

Q9

What happens to the love triangle after the survivors escape?

A.

After escaping to the surface, Alisa and Denis leave the hospital together, showing one relationship healing. However, Garin and Irina have a tense confrontation where Garin implicitly rejects Irina's appeals, showing their marriage remains fractured. Konstantinov is last seen driving in circles after the ambulance carrying Garin, leaving the triangle's resolution uncertain.

The unresolved emotional tensions between all three characters during the disaster carry forward into the ending.

Q10

How does Irina try to help rescue the survivors?

A.

After receiving the desperate call from the bunker where Garin and Konstantinov tell her they are trapped, Irina frantically tries to alert rescue teams. However, her messages are hampered by the chaotic emergency response, and rescuers initially descend believing those in the bunker have already drowned, delaying the actual rescue.

Irina's desperate phone calls from the surface create a parallel narrative of attempted rescue above ground.
