Too Late for Tears

In Los Angeles, a couple, Jane Palmer, Lizabeth Scott, and Alan Palmer, Arthur Kennedy, are heading home from a party when fate intervenes. A driver from another car tosses a bag of cash into their vehicle, and the Palmers quickly find themselves pursued by another vehicle. Faced with a blunt moral choice, they bicker about what to do with the money: Jane wants to keep it or at least keep a share, while Alan urges them to go to the police. After a tense moment of decision, they agree to check the bag at Union Station, hoping a quick inspection will clarify the risk and perhaps settle the dispute.

While Alan is away at work, a man named Danny Fuller, Dan Duryea, comes to the apartment with a claim that the money was meant for him. Jane denies that the bag contains anything for him and proposes a split that would benefit them both, heightening the sense that danger lurks just beneath a surface deal. Yet Alan opts to turn the bag over to authorities, a choice that upsets Jane and spurs her to hatch a colder plan. The motive shifts from merely avoiding trouble to actively removing a threat she perceives in Alan.

Jane’s scheme unfolds with a chilling blend of manipulation and a carefully staged accident. She proposes a ride in a pedal boat at MacArthur Park and sets up Fuller to meet her there, a plan designed to silence Alan for good. The moment arrives, and Jane and Fuller carry out the murder, sinking Alan’s body to keep their secret safe. But Fuller proves more stubborn than anticipated, surviving the attempt to end him. The aftershocks of the crime ripple outward as Jane tries to eliminate the threat once again, testing the limits of her nerve and her willingness to pay for certainty with more lives.

To complicate matters further, Jane devises a ruse to make it look as if Alan ran off to Mexico with the money, reporting him missing and hoping to erase the crime in the eyes of the world. Kathy Palmer, Alan’s sister who lives in the apartment next door, becomes suspicious and uncovers the bag’s claim ticket, a clue that threatens to unravel Jane’s carefully laid plans. Kathy’s presence injects a new urgency into the pursuit of truth and safety, drawing in a fresh dynamic to the already dangerous situation.

Don Blake, claiming to be Alan’s war buddy, arrives to help locate him. Don, Don DeFore, quickly finds himself entangled with Kathy, whose own loyalties and suspicions complicate the case. The pair’s budding attraction adds a human vulnerability to a story that grows increasingly tangled with every turn. Jane learns that Kathy has the claim ticket and pulls Fuller into a new line of pressure, pressing him to buy poison that could silence Kathy for good.

A tense moment of exposure follows as Jane unmasks Don as an impostor, knocks him out, and retrieves the claim ticket. With the ticket in hand, Jane reclaims the bag, while Fuller tries to explain that the money is payment for his silence over an insurance scam. The confrontation tilts toward tragedy when Jane uses the very poison meant for Kathy to fatally strike Fuller, and she escapes with the money, slipping away to Mexico while the net of deceit tightens around her.

Don tracks Jane to a hotel room, where he uses blackmail to force her into confessing that she killed Alan. The truth unspools further when Don reveals a more personal motive: he is the brother of Jane’s first husband, and he suspects she may have murdered him as well. The tension peaks as Mexican police breach the room, cornering Jane in a final, fatal moment. She slips from the balcony, ending the immediate danger but sealing the collapse of the life she tried to salvage.

Back in the hotel lobby, Don and Kathy—now married—decide to cut their honeymoon short and return to the United States, bringing the story to a close with a stark reminder of how greed, deception, and desperation can twist a simple choice into a chain of devastating consequences. The film lingers on the uneasy aftermath and the cost of betrayal, leaving viewers with a lingering impression of a city and a couple whose paths are forever altered by one fateful night.
