Ten-year-old Emil Tischbein, Bryan Russell, travels by bus from Neustadt to Berlin to deliver an envelope containing 400 marks to his grandmother, Nana Elsa Wagner. He falls asleep during the ride and wakes to find the money missing, convinced the thief is Grundeis Heinz Schubert who sat beside him. He follows the man to a Berlin cafe and summons a policeman, but Grundeis escapes to a rendezvous with The Baron Walter Slezak, his underworld associate.

Determined to recover the money, Emil teams up with a group of child detectives led by the street urchin Gustav Roger Mobley. The kids trail Grundeis and, through their careful listening, overhear a sinister plan: the two criminals intend to rob a major Berlin bank by tunneling into its vault, aided by Müller Peter Ehrlich. Emil is captured and forced to help carry out the heist.

After the bank vault is blown open, the Baron and Müller double-cross Grundeis, leaving Emil and Grundeis trapped in the tunnel to be blown up by a dynamite fuse. Gustav arrives just in time to rescue them.

Emil and the other children pursue the thieves and rally more kids from the neighborhood, who chase the criminals through the streets. The Baron and Müller are surrounded by the determined children and arrested by the police. In the end, Emil receives a reward and plans to share it with the other children who helped uncover the plot.

Q1

Why did Grundeis steal Emil's money?

A.

Grundeis is established as a petty criminal and tunnel-digging crook who targets vulnerable passengers. When Emil fell asleep on the bus, Grundeis took advantage of the opportunity to steal the envelope containing 400 marks. His motivation appears to be simple theft, he saw an easy target and took the money, though the larger plot reveals he was working with The Baron and involved in more serious criminal activities.

Q2

How did the child detectives find out about the bank robbery?

A.

The child detectives, led by Gustav, tailed Grundeis through Berlin and carefully listened in on his conversations. They overheard Grundeis meeting with The Baron and Müller, where the criminals discussed their plan to rob a major Berlin bank by tunneling into its vault. The children discovered the larger criminal operation purely through surveillance and eavesdropping.

Earlier, Emil's pursuit of Grundeis to a Berlin cafe sets the stage for the children to begin their investigation.

Q3

Why was Emil forced to help with the bank heist?

A.

Grundeis and his accomplices captured Emil while he was investigating the tunnel site. Recognizing the boy had been following them and could expose their plan, they forced Emil to participate in carrying out the heist under threat. They needed an additional person to help with the operation and kept Emil captive to prevent him from alerting the police.

Q4

What happened to Grundeis after the double-cross?

A.

When The Baron and Müller blew open the bank vault, they betrayed Grundeis and left him trapped in the tunnel with Emil. Both were left behind to be blown up by a dynamite fuse. Grundeis was saved when Gustav arrived just in time to rescue them before the explosion. The double-cross essentially eliminated Grundeis from the criminal operation, though his ultimate fate isn't detailed, he was likely arrested with the other criminals.

Q5

How did Gustav rescue Emil from the tunnel?

A.

Gustav arrived at the tunnel site in the nick of time, demonstrating the resourcefulness of the child detective team. The exact method isn't detailed in the summary, but his arrival prevented Emil and Grundeis from being killed by the dynamite fuse. This moment showcases the children's determination and their ability to track the criminals' movements despite being younger and less experienced than the adult criminals.

The children's earlier surveillance and investigation allowed them to locate the tunnel site.

Q6

Why did The Baron and Müller betray Grundeis?

A.

The Baron and Müller were planning to keep all the stolen money for themselves. By double-crossing Grundeis and leaving him trapped in the tunnel with Emil, they eliminated their partner and reduced the number of people who would need to split the proceeds. This is a classic criminal betrayal where partners turn on each other to maximize their own share of the loot.

Q7

How did the children manage to catch adult criminals?

A.

The children relied on teamwork, numbers, and local knowledge. After Gustav rescued Emil, the child detectives spread word through the neighborhood and rallied more kids to join the chase. They pursued The Baron and Müller through the streets of Berlin, overwhelming the criminals through sheer determination and coordination. Eventually, they surrounded the thieves until police arrived to make the arrests.

The earlier formation of the detective group and their successful surveillance established their capability.

Q8

What reward did Emil receive at the end?

A.

Emil received a monetary reward from the police for his role in solving the case and helping recover the stolen money. Rather than keeping it all to himself, he chose to share the reward with the other children who had helped him throughout the adventure. This act of generosity cemented the bond among the young detectives and marked the beginning of lasting friendships.

Q9

Why did Emil chase Grundeis instead of just reporting the theft?

A.

Emil was determined to recover the 400 marks his grandmother desperately needed. After waking to find the money missing, he became convinced Grundeis was the thief who had sat beside him. Rather than waiting for adult help, Emil took immediate action, following Grundeis to a Berlin cafe and attempting to apprehend him personally. His tenacious pursuit reflects the film's theme of resourceful children taking initiative.

Emil's initial determination sets the entire plot in motion.

Q10

What was Müller's role in the bank robbery plot?

A.

Müller was one of The Baron's criminal associates who helped execute the bank robbery plan. Working with The Baron and Grundeis, Müller participated in tunneling into the bank's vault and blowing it open. However, he ultimately betrayed Grundeis alongside The Baron, leaving both Grundeis and Emil to die in the tunnel while they escaped with the money.
