Because of Emil’s reputation as a troublemaker, the Svensson neighbours start a fund to send him to America. Yet his mishaps—getting his father stuck in the outhouse window and bitten by crawfish—are forgiven when he wins the family a free horse. Later, when farmhand Alfred falls gravely ill, Emil braves a snowstorm to get his friend to a doctor, risking his own life.
