Adapted from Bjarne Reuter’s 1975 juvenile novel, the film broadens the comedy while keeping bright Bertram at its core. When his seemingly kind but shady uncle—who has a criminal record—takes the unlucky working‑class children on an outing, they hatch a scheme to kidnap a rich kid. The plan works at first, then quickly spirals out of control.
