Jan and Brian Vokes settle into their routine as empty nesters in Wales. Jan works as a supermarket cashier while also caring for her elderly parents, while Brian spends his days at home, leading a rather uneventful life.

While working her second job at the pub, Jan overhears Howard Davies discussing his past experiences with a successful racehorse. Intrigued by these tales, Jan's interest in horse breeding sparks a new ambition.

Determined to pursue her dream of breeding racehorses, Jan and Brian purchase Rewbell, a once-glorious racehorse, with the hope of reviving her potential. They buy her for £300, believing she can be a new beginning for them.

Seeking assistance from Howard in selecting a suitable stud, Jan decides to form a syndicate with 20 locals, each contributing £10 a week to fund the endeavor. She distributes flyers around town to gather interest.
