Don't Breathe

In the ending of Don’t Breathe, Rocky manages to escape from Norman Nordstrom’s house after a tense confrontation. Throughout the film, Norman is revealed to be not just a blind home invader but a deeply disturbed and morally corrupt figure who has committed terrible acts, including kidnapping and raping the woman who killed his daughter. He has forced her to become a surrogate mother for his child using horrifying methods. During the climax, Rocky, who was initially one of the intruders aiming for quick cash, fights desperately to survive Norman’s wrath. She succeeds in killing Norman by shooting him, which ultimately frees her from his clutches.

However, the original ending was far darker. In the initial script, Norman would have captured Rocky and hidden her away in a concealed part of his house, where she would have been kept as his pregnant surrogate—effectively a perpetuation of his horrific plans. This would have meant Rocky becoming Norman’s pawn for a twisted, ongoing nightmare, leaving her entirely powerless and alone. Fortunately, filmmakers decided against this brutal ending, and instead, Rocky escapes, heading towards a better, though uncertain, future with her sister in Los Angeles. The film’s ending leaves room for a sequel, with Norman surviving and hinting at the possibility of further terror, but for now, Rocky’s escape provides a somewhat more hopeful conclusion amid the darkness.
