Subbalakshmi is a naive village girl who is kept close by her family. Her father arranges a match between Subbalakshmi and her cousin Prakash Rao, tying their fates together. The setup establishes Prakash Rao as the intended partner at the outset of the story.

Prakash Rao moves to the city to pursue higher studies, leaving Subbalakshmi behind. The distance sows uncertainty and longing in Subbalakshmi. She waits for his return, hopeful yet anxious about what the future holds.

To avoid questions from her father, Subbalakshmi lies about a tour and heads to the town. On the train, a thief named Raju ingratiates himself with her and secretly hides a stolen diamond necklace in Subbalakshmi's bag, intending to slip past the police. The encounter sets off a pursuit involving the necklace and new danger.

ACP Vikram shadows Raju to recover the necklace, while Raju follows Subbalakshmi to help locate Prakash Rao. During this period, Raju's initial affection for Subbalakshmi remains unspoken as he stays by her side. Subbalakshmi proceeds through a widening web of danger as she searches for her cousin.

Subbalakshmi discovers Prakash Rao's diabolic nature through his closeness with Lavanya and his manipulation to sway wealth. She learns he is a swindler who exploits her for status and money. The revelation deepens her resolve to uncover the truth.
