Meenakshi is saved from attackers by Jwala Singh in the forest. Jwala asks for her hand in marriage as thanks for saving her, but her father had previously denied him. The couple form a bond that will influence the rest of the tale.

That same night, a tiger reappears and is slain by Jwala while defending the villagers. The tiger kills a villager, and Jwala covers the body with his poncho as they wrestle the beast. Both he and the tiger tumble off a cliff, leaving the princess shocked.
