Pokémon Detective Pikachu (2019) Timeline Explained – Every Event in Order

Tim can understand Pikachu because Harry's consciousness is actually living inside the Pikachu. This explains why only Tim, as Harry's son, can hear and communicate with Pikachu, the bond between them transcends the typical human-Pokémon connection. This detail is revealed at the film's climax when Mewtwo discloses that Harry's mind resides within Pikachu.

Foreshadowing: Earlier scenes hint at this connection when Pikachu instinctively knows details about Tim's childhood that only Harry would know.

Harry didn't actually die in the car accident. He was abducted by Mewtwo after the crash because Mewtwo needed his help to escape from the laboratory where Dr. Ann Laurent was experimenting on him. Harry's consciousness was transferred into Pikachu, making it appear as though he had died while his actual body was used as a vessel for the Pokémon.

Foreshadowing: Howard Clifford's footage suggesting Harry survived planted the first seeds of doubt about the official accident report.

Harry was working with Dr. Ann Laurent on Mewtwo experiments at Ryme City Laboratory. When Mewtwo escaped and needed help, Harry went to assist him but was severely injured in the process. To save Harry's life, Mewtwo transferred his consciousness into a Pikachu, the same Pikachu that had been Harry's police partner. This explains both Pikachu's detective skills and his memory loss.

Foreshadowing: Pikachu's deerstalker hat bearing Harry's name serves as the first clue to their partnership.

Howard Clifford plans to force a fusion of consciousness between humans and their Pokémon using Mewtwo's psychic powers. He believes this will create a perfect symbiosis between humans and Pokémon, essentially merging their minds together. To execute this, he needed Mewtwo captured and controlled, which is why he orchestrated the conspiracy involving Harry and the laboratory experiments.

Foreshadowing: Howard's generous funding of Pokémon research and his interest in the Mewtwo experiments hint at his ulterior motives.

Pikachu left because he believed he had failed Tim and Harry. After being healed by Mewtwo, Pikachu felt he had let them down by not solving the case and finding the real Harry. This misunderstanding stemmed from his guilt over not being able to protect Tim during the Greninja attack and his confusion about his own identity. The separation is brief, and they reconcile during the climax.

Foreshadowing: Pikachu's earlier doubts about his abilities and memory loss set up this emotional moment.

The 'R' gas is a mysterious substance related to the Pokémon experiments conducted by Dr. Ann Laurent. It appears to have mind-affecting properties on Pokémon, causing them to become aggressive and uncontrollable, similar to the effects seen when Tim accidentally released a purple gas that influenced the Aipom group earlier. The gas is part of the larger conspiracy to manipulate Pokémon behavior for Howard Clifford's plans.

Foreshadowing: The Aipom incident with the purple gas foreshadows the larger pattern of Pokémon manipulation.

Ms. Norman and Roger are revealed to be working together as part of Howard Clifford's conspiracy. Roger is actually an ally of Howard, and Ms. Norman, who appears to be a high-ranking figure in Ryme City, is secretly collaborating with them to help orchestrate the Pokémon mind-control scheme. Their deception is uncovered during Tim's confrontation with Howard in the climax.

Foreshadowing: Roger’s suspicious behavior and his connection to Howard’s office hinted at deeper involvement.

Pikachu wears the deerstalker hat because it belonged to Harry Goodman, his former police partner. The hat bears Harry's name inside, serving as the key clue that helps Tim trust Pikachu's claims about being his father's partner. The hat represents their partnership and becomes a symbol of their detective duo throughout the film.

Foreshadowing: The hat is introduced early as Pikachu's signature accessory, establishing his detective persona.

Tim chooses to stay in Ryme City because he discovers his dream of becoming a detective alongside his father and Pikachu. After learning Harry is alive and his consciousness resides in Pikachu, Tim decides to embrace the adventure rather than return to his mundane insurance job. This choice represents his growth from someone who abandoned Pokémon training to someone who reclaims his passion for investigation and family.

Foreshadowing: Tim's early decision to investigate his father's death rather than simply settling affairs shows his investigative instincts.

Mewtwo is a powerful cloned Pokémon created from Mew's DNA that was being used for illegal experiments in Ryme City. Originally held captive by Dr. Ann Laurent and Howard Clifford, Mewtwo escaped and needed help, which is how Harry became involved. Rather than being a villain, Mewtwo is actually an ally who helps Tim and Pikachu by healing Pikachu and ultimately stopping Howard's plan. Mewtwo represents both the object of the conspiracy and the force that helps defeat it.

Foreshadowing: Howard's interest in Mewtwo experiments and the laboratory setting establish Mewtwo's importance from the beginning.
