In September 1942, Captain Yamagami orders the Yamato to rendezvous with the Combined Fleet at the Truk Islands in Micronesia. The fleet gathers at a South Seas base that blends serene beauty with the brutal realities of war. This assignment frames the crew’s coming trials.

The Yamato arrives at Truk, bringing together officers and sailors including Noboru Osako and the young Ensign Takeshi Kaido. Kaido clutches a photo of his sweetheart Chie Kojima, while Chie longs for his return. To ease personal worries, Osako sneaks aboard an island woman named Momoka and her elderly grandfather, adding tension aboard the ship.

The old man accompanying Momoka begins telling a local legend about monsters inhabiting the surrounding waters. He mentions Bonefishes as danger and hints at a greater threat called Reigo. Osako dismisses the tale as superstition, while a seed of unease takes root among the crew.

A lookout spots a massive, half-submerged silhouette in the distance and the Yamato fires on it, scoring a direct hit. The mysterious object sinks beneath the waves and emits an eerie cry, leaving the crew stunned. Osako reports the incident and the strange cry to his commander, raising doubts about the legend.
