Godzilla vs. Megaguirus

In 1954, repeated nuclear testing revives Godzilla, and the legendary creature tears through Tokyo in furious retaliation. The destruction is so vast that Tokyo’s reconstruction shifts the capital to Osaka, marking a decade of recovery before a new era begins. A dozen years later, a specialized unit within the Japan Self-Defense Forces, the G-Graspers, is formed to track and oppose the monster’s renewed onslaught as it menaces the nation, focusing its efforts on protecting critical sites like the Tōkai Nuclear Power Plant.

Fast forward to a world where clean plasma energy has begun to replace nuclear power, yet that green promise does not deter the creature from returning to the very source of energy it seeks. The city’s defenses are tested as Kiriko Tsujimori leads a battered cadre of soldiers in a desperate stand against Godzilla’s relentless attacks. The ambivalent peace is shattered when the ban on plasma energy collapses in the wake of the monster’s assaults, and a new fear takes root: the weaponization of energy itself could invite catastrophe.

Five years after the ban, a breakthrough weapon called the Dimension Tide—an experimental satellite-based system that fires miniature black holes—creates a seismic new danger. From this strange technology erupts a prehistoric menace: a dragonfly-like Meganula egg sac left behind in the wake of a wormhole. A boy named Jun Hayasaka discovers the sac and brings it into the bustling life of Tokyo, where it begins to ooze a strange fluid and split into countless Meganulon and Meganula. At night, a Meganulon strikes a couple on a date, instantly transforming the quiet into a nightmarish scene as it molts into a Meganula.

Meanwhile, Godzilla resurges in search of a fresh energy source, ignoring an official ban and clashing with the G-Graspers. The battles intensify as a rebellious scientist, Hajime Kudo, lends his expertise to the fight, while the Meganula swarm is drawn by the energy Godzilla emits from the Kiganjima area. The Dimension Tide is launched in a bid to stem the threat, and although most Meganula are destroyed in the clash, a few siphon off Godzilla’s energy and return to the flooded Shibuya, seemingly following a trail of power.

In a pivotal turn, the surviving Meganula inject Godzilla’s energy into a queen’s nymph, triggering a terrifying evolution: the queen molts into the colossal Megaguirus. The winged monstrous queen rips through Shibuya with shock waves from her wings, then advances toward Odaiba to confront Godzilla in a dramatic showdown. After a brutal engagement, Megaguirus is finally defeated when Godzilla crushes her stinger and unleashes a decisive atomic breath. The narrative reveals a disquieting fact: Godzilla was drawn to a secret plasma energy project housed at the Science Institute, violating the clampdown on such power.

With the danger still present, the G-Graspers persevere, but the Dimension Tide suffers a critical failure as it drops out of orbit, complicating their efforts to lock onto the threat. In a daring gambit, Kiriko Tsujimori pilots a ship toward Godzilla and ejects at the last possible moment, while the weapon’s recovery system completes one last, desperate scan and fires just before burning up on reentry. A final, quiet tremor of seismic activity leaves lingering questions as Hajime Kudo is called to dig deeper into the mystery, continuing to explore the strange events that bind energy, monster, and machine.

The film closes with a post-credits moment that hints at what remains hidden: Godzilla has been buried underground as Tokyo is shaken by another earthquake, leaving an ominous sense of what might rise again when the world least expects it.
