Death Watch

Katherine Mortenhoe, Romy Schneider, lives in a near-future world where death from illness has become rare, and her diagnosis of an incurable disease turns her into a national sensation. Journalists swarm, cameras hover, and the line between privacy and fame grows razor-thin as she becomes the focal point of a looming reality spectacle. A powerful television executive, Vincent Ferriman, Vadim Glowna, from the network NTV, offers a life-changing sum of money to film her last days and turn them into a reality show called Death Watch. The deal rests on a troubling foundation: her doctor colludes with the network, secretly recording her diagnosis and handing her painkillers that are anything but soothing.

Katherine agrees to the deal, accepting £300,000 cash upfront and, after handing the money to her husband, slips away in disguise to escape the glare of the city. She drifts toward anonymity, seeking shelter at a night venue for the down-and-out, where she is found by Roddy, a senior NTV cameraman who is not what he seems at first glance. Roddy, Harvey Keitel, has undergone a radical medical modification — an experimental implant of cameras and transmitters behind his eyes that feeds everything he sees back to NTV for the show’s feed. The arrangement is engineered to captivate viewers, but it exacts a brutal personal toll: a side effect that will blank him out completely if he spends too long in darkness, forcing him to stay awake by shining a small flashlight on his eyes through the night.

To stay hidden, Katherine asks Roddy to guide her far from prying eyes into the countryside. In truth, she hopes to reach the home of her first husband, Gerald Mortenhoe, Max von Sydow, before she dies. Along the way, she presses Roddy to fetch some makeup in a town, a small request that becomes a moment of quiet humanity amid the chaos of the pursuit. Their detour leads them to a bar where Roddy unexpectedly encounters the primetime Death Watch broadcast — a sharp reminder of how deeply the network’s gaze has penetrated ordinary life. On their way back to the makeshift hideout, Roddy experiences an emotional collapse and, in a moment of desperation, throws his flashlight into the water. Katherine searches for him and, though she finds the device later, it is too late: Roddy goes blind. He finally reveals his true identity and purpose to Katherine, acknowledging the dangerous role he plays in her fate.

With the live feed concluded, Vincent accelerates into action, taking off in a helicopter with a film crew to find the two fugitives. Roddy and Katherine manage to outpace NTV’s pursuit and reach Gerald’s house, where Gerald is aware of the TV show’s existence and its intrusion into their lives. He pleads with them to abandon the ruse and reconsider, but Katherine has reached the end of the road. Against Gerald’s pleas, she ingests all of the remaining pills and dies, her breath fading as the network closes in. When Vincent’s helicopter finally arrives, it carries Roddy’s wife, who stands by to care for her traumatized husband in his new, irreversible condition. Gerald ends the story with a fierce promise to himself: if Vincent lingers, he will fly away only with the threat of deadly consequence hanging over him.

In the quiet aftermath, the film probes questions of consent, media obsession, and the ethics of turning a final, intimate moment into a public spectacle. The characters move through a tense choreography of fame, longing, and responsibility, each driven by personal ache and the force of a system that monetizes mortality. The stark contrast between Katherine’s desire to see her former husband one last time and the merciless pull of the media machine creates a fragile drama where human dignity confronts the cold calculus of television ratings. The result is a somber meditation on how technology and entertainment reshape the most private of human experiences, leaving behind a wake of emotional consequence that lingers well after the cameras have turned away.
