The ending of Death Note serves as a final, sobering commentary on the corrupting nature of power, though the specific details of Light Yagami’s demise differ significantly between the anime and manga. In both versions, Light’s reign as "Kira" concludes in a warehouse after his successor, Near, exposes his identity to the Task Force. Having been tricked into using a fake Death Note, Light is cornered and injured, leading to the pivotal moment where Ryuk, the Shinigami who started it all, steps in to write the final chapter.

In the anime adaptation, Light’s death is framed with a sense of tragic dignity and symbolism. After being shot by Matsuda, a wounded Light escapes the warehouse, hallucinating a vision of his former rival, L, as he stumbles away. He eventually collapses on a staircase, bleeding out in a location that visually represents the story's central rule: users of the Death Note go neither to Heaven nor Hell.
