Death Come True (2020) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Death Come True (2020), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

Makoto Karaki (Kanata Hongo) wakes in a strange hotel room with no memory, and a jarring television broadcast confirms the worst: he is a serial killer. The setup pulls him into a place where the exits are sealed shut, leaving him with no easy way out and a growing urge to understand what happened. Inside this confinement, two police investigators enter the scene: Akane Sachimura (Chiaki Kuriyama) and Nozomu Kuji (Win Morisaki), who peg him as the killer behind a string of strangulations. Yet Karaki feels an inexplicable pull toward Sachimura, a pull that threads through the chaos of memory and motive.

As the investigation unfolds, Karaki endures repeated deaths that seem to unlock fragments of his past. Each reset of consciousness nudges him closer to a coherent memory, even as the boundaries between reality and illusion blur. His search for truth leads him to the hotel Concierge (Yuki Kaji), a calm, guiding presence who dispels any notion of ordinary space by revealing a startling truth: the hotel is not truly real. It is a virtual reality space created by the “Come True” system, a technology capable of reconstructing memories from living or deceased individuals for others to view via immersive VR. The Come True system was designed to aid mental health, but it is surreptitiously harnessed for police investigations, blurring ethics and purpose.

The Concierge drops another revelation: Karaki is, in fact, another Investigator who has connected the real Karaki and Sachimura—both gone in the real world—with the case to uncover Sachimura’s death. A warning follows: an unidentified hacker is attempting to delete the hotel by breaking into Come True, a breach that wiped memories and sent the Investigator spiraling into a false identity. The Concierge urges him to escape, something he has always had the chance to do with each death. Yet the drive to seek truth persists, pulling him deeper into the labyrinth of memory and motive.

With more memories surfacing, Karaki and Sachimura confront Kuji, pressing him on corruption and hidden agendas. Sachimura had suspected Kuji of foul play and had struck a dangerous bargain with Karaki to murder her in exchange for safe passage out of the country, but Kuji betrayed them and killed Karaki instead. The hacker—revealed to be the real Kuji—steps forward, admitting guilt and presenting a stark choice: remain in the virtual world with Sachimura forever, or return to the real world to expose Kuji’s crimes.

If the Investigator chooses to stay, Kuji escapes but warns them not to leave the hotel, as the world outside remains unknown and unstable. The pair ultimately opts to depart the hotel and attempt a fragile, hopeful life together within a virtual realm shaped from Sachimura’s memories.

If the Investigator chooses to leave, he follows clues left by Sachimura that point to hard evidence against Kuji. The result is Kuji’s arrest and a formal investigation into Sachimura’s murder and the killings attributed to Karaki, bringing the truth into the light beyond the confines of the hotel.
