Dexter Cornell, a college professor who once showed real promise, finds himself stumbling into a police station to tell a story that will end up revealing his own supposed murder. The tale of Nick’s father—a burglar who once victimized the wealthy Mr. Fitzwaring and who was killed in a confrontation with the Fitzwaring chauffeur, Bernard—adds a layer of class intrigue to the mystery. The Fitzwaring widow funds Nick’s education, and the family dynamics reveal a tangled tangle of affection, protection, and fear. Cookie, Fitzwaring’s daughter, admits a complicated love affair with Nick, and she becomes a key figure in understanding why Nick’s life might have been cut short. Dex finally confronts Fitzwaring, a woman whose wealth and power mask a web of secrets. Fitzwaring reveals a devastating truth: Nick Lang is her son from a previous marriage, a revelation that reframes the earlier suspicions and exposes the motive behind the murder of Gail’s alleged lover and Nick’s father. The revelation of Nick’s parentage reframes the entire motive structure, and Fitzwaring admits that she killed both men to protect her children from scandal, and that Bernard’s burglary deception was designed to misdirect the investigation. With all this exposed, Fitzwaring’s own guilt drives her to suicide, cutting short a long, tangled chain of coercion and fear.

Back at his office, Dex notices a green sediment in the Scotch he shared with Hal, a critical clue that cracks the case open. Hal, who had covetously plagiarized Nick Lang’s manuscript after reading it, confesses to poisoning Dex and to the broader web of manipulation surrounding the author’s legacy. Dex uses the crucial evidence to confront Hal, a struggle ensues, and Dex ultimately shoots Hal dead, bringing the confrontation to a brutal end.
