What Happens in David’s Birthday: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of David’s Birthday (2009) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Two couples, Matteo and Francesca, and Shary and Diego, decide to spend the summer together in a beach house at the foot of Mount Circeo. Matteo, a psychologist, is married to Francesca, and they have a five-year-old daughter named Elena. Shary and Diego, who share a more volatile relationship, have a son together named David, who studies abroad in the United States. David returns to Italy for the first time in five years to spend time with his family and celebrate his birthday.

Upon David’s arrival, the air in the house changes as David and Matteo begin to develop unexpected feelings for each other. Only Leonard, Shary’s brother who has come back from his travels around the world, seems to sense what’s happening, watching the tension grow with a wary, almost preoccupied calm.

As the days unfold, the delicate balance of Matteo’s marriage starts to crack. The previously easy rhythm of the two couples becomes strained, and the undercurrents of desire and loyalty threaten to pull the families apart. The escalating tension hangs over meals and conversations, making every shared moment feel thinner and more charged.

One night, while everyone else is out preparing for David’s birthday party, Matteo slips into David’s bedroom, and the two men have sex. Francesca returns home, unable to gain entry through the front door and entering instead through a patio door into David’s room, where she discovers the scene. She runs out, and Matteo follows in a frantic attempt to confront what’s happened. In a sudden turn of events, Francesca dashes around a corner and is struck by a car, dying in the street.

Later, as the four adults gather for supper, Shary confronts Matteo about his whereabouts at the time of the accident, and the film closes on Matteo’s sobs, leaving a quiet, unresolved ache in its wake.

David’s Birthday Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about David’s Birthday (2009): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does Matteo become attracted to David?

Matteo, a psychologist, finds himself drawn to David during his visit. The summary indicates that their conversations grow more personal over the course of Day 2, and Matteo begins to sense a closer connection forming between himself and David. The film suggests this attraction emerges gradually as they spend time together, though the exact psychological triggers are left somewhat ambiguous. The secluded beach house setting and the relaxed summer atmosphere create an intimate environment that allows their connection to develop.

Foreshadowing: The timeline notes that David's arrival 'unsettles the existing harmony' from the very beginning.

Q2

How does Francesca discover the affair?

Francesca discovers the affair by accident. When she returns home while everyone else is out preparing for David's birthday party, she cannot enter through the front door because she doesn't have the keys. She instead enters through the patio door, which leads directly into David's bedroom where she finds Matteo and David together. The discovery is sudden and completely unexpected, making the emotional impact devastating.

Foreshadowing: Earlier, the tension between Matteo and Francesca had been building, with Francesca feeling the strain more than others but not yet understanding its source.

Q3

What causes Francesca to run into the street and get hit by a car?

After discovering the affair, Francesca is overwhelmed and runs out of the house in distress. Matteo follows her in a frantic attempt to confront what has happened. In the chaos of this confrontation, Francesca dashes around a corner and is struck by a passing car, dying instantly in the street. The accident is sudden and tragic, occurring on the same night she discovers her husband's betrayal.

Q4

What does Shary accuse Matteo of during supper?

During the late supper that follows the accident, Shary directly confronts Matteo about his whereabouts at the time of the accident. She challenges his explanations and questions his loyalty, suggesting she suspects more than what Matteo is revealing about that night. The accusation remains somewhat vague in the summary, but it clearly implies Shary believes Matteo knows more about what happened to Francesca or was involved in some way beyond the affair itself.

Q5

Why does Matteo cry at the end of the film?

Matteo cries as the film closes, revealing the weight of guilt and the collapse of his life. The ending is intentionally ambiguous, but Matteo's sobbing suggests he is overwhelmed by multiple factors: the loss of his wife, the exposure of his affair, and the accusation from Shary about his whereabouts during the accident. The unresolved ache in the final scene leaves viewers uncertain about whether his distress stems solely from grief and guilt over the affair, or whether there is something more he is hiding about Francesca's death.

Q6

What role does Leonard play in the story?

Leonard, Shary's brother who has just returned from traveling around the world, serves as an observant outsider who senses the danger developing between Matteo and David. He is the only one who appears to notice the shift in household dynamics and the tension growing between Matteo and David. His 'wary, almost preoccupied calm' positions him as a quiet observer who perceives what the other characters are ignoring or refusing to acknowledge.

Foreshadowing: Leonard's perspective as a returning traveler gives him an outsider's clarity that allows him to see what insiders miss.

Q7

Was Matteo's marriage already troubled before David arrived?

The summary indicates that Matteo and Francesca had a marriage that appeared stable enough for a summer vacation together with another couple. However, the arrival of David begins to 'crack' the 'delicate balance' of Matteo's marriage. Francesca is noted to feel the growing tension more than others, even before she understands its source. This suggests the marriage may have had underlying vulnerabilities that were exposed by the circumstances, though the film does not explicitly state the marriage was troubled before David's arrival.

Q8

Why is the Italian Riviera setting important to the story?

The beach house at the foot of Mount Circeo provides an isolated, intimate setting where the two families are cut off from their normal lives. The lazy summer atmosphere and sun-drenched environment create a deceptive sense of carefree relaxation that makes the subsequent betrayal and tragedy more shocking. The secluded location also explains why the characters are together constantly, allowing the tension to build relentlessly across meals and conversations until it reaches the breaking point.
