What Happens in Not a Love Story: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Not a Love Story (2011) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Standing at 5'6", Chandigarh-born Anusha Chawla, [Mahie Gill], bids adieu to her boyfriend, Robin Fernandes, [Deepak Dobriyal], and relocates to Mumbai to pursue acting. Weeks later she meets a filmmaker, Sam, who promises a lead role on the condition that she become intimate with him, but she walks away, choosing her autonomy over a shortcut to fame. She faces more disappointment when a project with Richa falls through, yet she remains stubbornly determined to push forward. Disheartened but hopeful, she continues to audition, buoyed by a small circle of support: Anju, [Prabhleen Sandhu], and Prashant, who cheer her on even as the rejections pile up.

Her perseverance pays off when she encounters Ashish Bhatnagar, [Ajay Gehi], who places her on a shortlist, wins approval, and signs her on for a lead. The celebration is brief and reckless: in a pub, they drink, and the night ends in her Malad flat. The following day, a thrilled Robin visits to share in her success, but his happiness turns to fury toward Ashish, whom he kills in a moment of rage. He dismembers the body, and the couple borrows Prashant's car to drive to a desolate spot in Dahisar, where they burn the evidence. Before returning home, Robin makes a stark demand: she must not tell anyone that he is in Mumbai.

Days later, Prashant, Anju, and she go to Malad Police Station to report Ashish missing. Inspector Mane, [Zakir Hussain], begins an investigation, collecting statements and pursuing leads. As the case unfolds, Mane grows suspicious of Anusha, summoning her for questioning and subjecting her to interrogation and pressure. Under the mounting strain, she confesses, and is arrested. Robin is also arrested and brought to Mumbai, and the two are ultimately produced in court.

The questions people ask most about Not a Love Story (2011): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why did Robin kill Ashish?

Robin killed Ashish in a fit of rage when he visited Anusha the morning after she celebrated getting the role. Seeing Ashish leaving her Malad flat and realizing they had spent the night together, Robin's jealousy and anger erupted. He attacked and killed Ashish, then proceeded to dismember the body to hide the evidence of the murder.

Foreshadowing: The tension between Robin and Anusha had been building as he urged her to return home while she pursued her acting dreams in Mumbai, creating underlying resentment.

Q2

Why did Anusha help dispose of the body?

Anusha helped Robin dismember and burn Ashish's body because she was already complicit in the murder. She was present when it happened and had no way to escape the situation without implicating herself. Fear of being caught and possible coercion by Robin kept her from refusing.

Q3

Why did Anusha confess to the police?

Anusha confessed after Inspector Mane interrogated her intensely and applied psychological pressure. With no legal counsel and mounting stress from the investigation, she broke down and admitted her involvement in Ashish's disappearance, leading to her arrest.

Foreshadowing: The police investigation had been building since the missing person report, with Mane increasingly suspicious of Anusha's behavior.

Q4

Why did Robin demand Anusha not tell anyone he was in Mumbai?

Robin ordered Anusha to keep his presence in Mumbai secret because he knew he had committed murder and wanted to avoid being connected to the crime. By staying hidden, he hoped to prevent the police from linking him to Ashish's disappearance and subsequent murder.

Foreshadowing: This demand foreshadows Robin's awareness of his guilt and his attempt to create distance between himself and the crime scene.

Q5

How did the police connect Anusha to the murder?

Her inconsistent statements and nervous behavior led him to pressure her into confessing, which revealed the truth about the murder.

Q6

Why did Anusha spend the night with Ashish after getting the role?

Anusha and Ashish celebrated her signing for the lead role by drinking heavily at a pub in Malad. The celebration led to intoxication, and they ended up spending the night together at her flat. The next morning, Robin arrived to congratulate her and discovered Ashish there, triggering the violent confrontation.

Q8

Why did Anusha report Ashish missing if she knew he was dead?

Anusha, Robin, Anju, and Prashant went to the police station together to report Ashish as missing. This was a calculated move to appear innocent and avoid suspicion. By filing a missing person report, they attempted to establish an alibi and throw off the investigation, not realizing the police would eventually see through their story.

Q9

Why did Anusha refuse Sam but accept help from Ashish?

Anusha refused Sam's offer because he explicitly demanded sexual favors in exchange for a role, which she saw as a direct ethical violation. With Ashish, however, the relationship was different, he genuinely evaluated her talent, approved her for the role, and their intimacy developed organically during a celebration, not as a transactional condition.

Foreshadowing: This contrast highlights Anusha's strong moral boundaries against exploitative advances, making her subsequent entanglement in crime even more tragic.
