What Happens in Dad's Army: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Dad's Army (2016) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

In spring 1944, the tension rises as German forces actively seek intelligence regarding the imminent Allied invasion. Their efforts hit a snag when MI5 agents, Major Cunningham and Captain Meeks, intercept one of their spies in London. Across the English Channel, in the coastal town of Walmington-on-Sea, Captain Mainwaring finds his Home Guard unit struggling for recognition of their contributions to the war effort.

The situation takes a turn when the platoon, during a routine exercise, inadvertently forces Rose Winters, an elegant journalist, off the road. This incident sparks excitement in the platoon as they learn she plans to write an article about them for a national magazine. However, her presence also ignites rivalry among the townsfolk, particularly with their wives. Adding another layer of complexity, Sergeant Wilson realizes that he had once tutored Rose during her time at the University of Oxford, which leads to a budding friendship.

Unbeknownst to the platoon, Rose is, in fact, a spy sent by Germany to gather crucial information about the Allied invasion plans. Her activities do not go unnoticed, as the transmission she makes via radio is swiftly intercepted by Major Cunningham and Captain Meeks, prompting them to investigate further. Upon meeting with Mainwaring and briefing him on the delicate situation, he sees an opportunity to protect his platoon from disbandment by their senior officer, Colonel Theakes, after a mishap during a patrol near Dover.

Seizing the chance, Rose joins the next patrol through Private Joe Walker, who inadvertently reveals his illegal bootlegging business. During this outing, Rose cleverly extracts vital information regarding the Allies' strategy, including the specific location of the upcoming invasion. Under Mainwaring’s command, the platoon is tasked with uncovering the identity of the spy among them. However, Rose skillfully misleads Mainwaring into believing that it is Wilson who is the traitor, leading to his arrest.

The narrative unfolds further when Mainwaring decides to meet with Rose to thank her for her perceived help. Meanwhile, the rest of the platoon detains Wilson for more questioning. However, before long, evidence surfaces that exposes Rose as the genuine spy they have been searching for. The tension escalates when they finally track her down, discovering her holding Mainwaring captive alongside a Wehrmacht landing party. He had stumbled upon the truth after witnessing a German U-boat emerging in a nearby bay.

The Home Guard, with assistance from their wives, gallantly intervenes to rescue Mainwaring, managing to capture Rose and the landing party, which forces the U-boat to retreat. In a swift turn of events, Cunningham and Meeks arrest Rose, ensuring that her intelligence remains secured and does not reach enemy hands. Colonel Theakes recognizes the platoon's efforts, saving them from disbandment. The story concludes with Mainwaring and Wilson mending their friendship, as both men join their platoon in a celebratory parade through Walmington-on-Sea, embracing their hard-won victory and renewed camaraderie.

Dad's Army Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Dad's Army (2016): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why was the Home Guard at risk of being disbanded?

In Dad's Army, the Home Guard faced disbandment after a mishap during a routine patrol near Dover that drew the disapproval of their senior officer, Colonel Theakes. Mainwaring saw catching a real spy as a rare opportunity to redeem the platoon and prove their value, which is why he agreed to cooperate with MI5 rather than simply sending Rose away.

Foreshadowing: Early in the film, Mainwaring's frustration over the platoon's lack of recognition establishes how desperate he is for a win.

  • home guard disbandment
  • colonel theakes
  • dover patrol
  • mainwaring

Q2

Who is Rose Winters and what is her real mission?

Rose Winters is not a journalist at all, but a German spy sent to gather intelligence about the imminent Allied invasion. She uses her cover as an elegant writer for a national magazine to get close to the Home Guard, charm the platoon, and extract strategic details about where the invasion will take place.

Foreshadowing: Her immediate interest in joining the Dover patrol hints that her journalism cover is really a way to access military information.

Q3

Why did Mainwaring arrest Sergeant Wilson?

Rose deliberately misled Mainwaring into believing that Wilson was the actual traitor, exploiting the trust Mainwaring placed in her apparent help. Her manipulation exploited the existing tension between the two officers, and it was only later that evidence surfaced exposing Rose as the real spy.

Foreshadowing: Rose's earlier closeness with Wilson sets up exactly the kind of suspicion she later weaponises against him.

Q4

How did Mainwaring discover Rose was actually a spy?

Mainwaring stumbled onto the truth after witnessing a German U-boat emerging in a nearby bay, which led him straight to Rose holding him captive alongside a Wehrmacht landing party. His accidental discovery turned what should have been a thank-you meeting into a hostage situation.

Foreshadowing: Mainwaring's decision to meet Rose alone, without backup, shows how completely she had won his trust.

Q5

How did Rose find out about the Allied invasion plans?

Rose got herself attached to the next Dover patrol through her friendship with Private Joe Walker, who inadvertently revealed his illegal bootlegging business during the outing. While the platoon was distracted, she cleverly extracted vital intelligence about the Allies' strategy, including the specific location of the upcoming invasion.

Foreshadowing: Walker's willingness to confide in Rose earlier in the film shows how easily she earns the men's trust.

Q6

What was Wilson's connection to Rose Winters?

Sergeant Wilson had once tutored Rose during her time at the University of Oxford, which led to a budding friendship between them. This prior academic relationship created a false sense of trust that Rose exploited to deflect suspicion away from herself and onto Wilson.

Foreshadowing: Wilson's immediate warmth toward Rose at their first meeting hints at a deeper shared history the platoon cannot see.

  • rose winters
  • oxford tutor

Q7

Why did the wives help with the rescue mission?

The wives of the Home Guard joined the rescue to help free Mainwaring and capture the German landing party after the platoon tracked Rose to her hideout. Their involvement proved vital in overwhelming the Wehrmacht operatives and forcing the U-boat to retreat without recovering its men.

Foreshadowing: The wives' earlier rivalry with Rose over the men's attention sets up their willingness to turn against her.

Q8

What happened to the German U-boat?

After the Home Guard and their wives captured the landing party on shore, the German U-boat was forced to retreat without its operatives. MI5 agents Cunningham and Meeks then arrested Rose, ensuring the gathered intelligence never reached German command.

Foreshadowing: The U-boat's brief surfacing near Walmington-on-Sea hints that the Germans were operating much closer to home than anyone realised.

Q9

How did MI5 find out Rose was a German spy?

After the Home Guard successfully rescued Mainwaring and captured the German landing party, Colonel Theakes recognised their bravery and the strategic value of their actions. That recognition saved the platoon from disbandment and gave them a newfound standing in the community.

Foreshadowing: Theakes' earlier threat of disbandment contrasts sharply with his later praise, showing how a single decisive victory can change official opinion.

Foreshadowing: Walker's casual conversation with Rose earlier in the film establishes her as someone the men talk to freely.
