The story weaves together two pivotal narratives, separated by two years, shedding light on the lives of its central characters. In 1982, we meet Wylie Cooper, an engineer diligently working on a sophisticated targeting system designed for a tank in the U.S. Army’s inventory. Fast forward to 1984, where Lt. T.M. Landry, a skilled commander, takes the helm of the formidable XM-10 Annihilator, equipped with Cooper’s groundbreaking technology that was initially hailed as revolutionary.

However, chaos soon ensues when the XM-10 is revealed to be riddled with faults, leaving Landry and his crew grappling to control the tank as it spirals out of control, plunging them into the devastating conflict amid Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait.

Simultaneously, Cooper’s endeavors with the “DYP-gyro,” a component intended for the new tank, bear significant implications. As an engineer at a troubled defense firm, the success of his invention is closely tied to the company’s survival. However, when his DYP-gyro prototype fails a vital test, it seals the company’s fate and leaves Cooper disheartened.

The tide begins to turn when Cooper encounters Frank Holtzman, a fellow engineer, who, fearing for his future after a meeting with Jeff, a covert KGB operative, stealthily slips Cooper’s plans for the DYP-gyro into his briefcase. Following Holtzman’s untimely death, Cooper stumbles upon these crucial documents, plunging him into a web of deception and danger.

As Cooper contends with these new challenges, his colleague Steve Loparino takes credit for his achievements, soaking up the recognition for “saving” the company, while Cooper remains oblivious to the impact of his contributions.

In 1984, Landry finds himself under assault from Iraqi aircraft, desperately beseeching them to spare his tank by exclaiming, > “I’m from Cleveland!” in a moment filled with vulnerability, as he clings to the hope that his American identity will resonate with the enemy.

The narrative reaches a turning point when Cooper receives a request from Jeff in 1982 for the DYP plans. What appears to be a simple inquiry spirals into chaos as the FBI, aware of Cooper’s prior misdeeds, plans to use him as bait in a carefully orchestrated operation. Events escalate rapidly; Jeff is shot during a fierce confrontation, and Cooper himself is gravely injured.

In a poignant moment on the operating table, Cooper confides in his attractive colleague Clair, revealing the true story behind his appropriated work. This heartfelt disclosure ignites a tempest of emotions, with Clair’s fury mirrored by that of Laura, Cooper’s wife, who inadvertently learns of her husband’s betrayal. Amidst the escalating turmoil, Cooper receives alarming news: the DYP-gyro he has taken credit for is deeply flawed, jeopardizing the WAM component in a combat scenario and putting the tank’s viability at risk.

As the plot hurtles toward its thrilling climax, we return to 1984, where Landry attempts to engage the main gun while enduring a relentless assault by an Iraqi gunship. As anticipated, the inadequacies of the DYP manifest, leading to disastrous outcomes in the WAM. The story takes an intense twist, flashing back to 1982, where a penitent Cooper confronts his superiors about the inevitable flaws in the DYP design.

In a desperate bid for survival, Landry faces a formidable enemy while launching the tank’s air defense rockets. Just when it seems all hope is lost, the camera focuses on the revamped workings of the DYP, reengineered thanks to an ingenious idea inspired by Cooper while fixing one of his son’s toys. This clever redesign empowers the tank’s rockets, striking down the Iraqi gunship and etching both Cooper’s and Landry’s names into the annals of heroism. The film culminates on a triumphant note, celebrating the hard-fought victories these two remarkable men have earned.
