What Happens in Convent of Sinners: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Convent of Sinners (1986) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

France, 1700. Susanna, Eva Grimaldi is a young woman whose life is shattered after a brutal assault by her stepfather. Her mother witnesses the crime and, in distress, urges that Susanna enter a convent, even though the move is against her will. The monastery is a strange, uneasy world where strict rules coexist with troubling undercurrents of desire and power.

The Mother Superior, Aldina Martano, becomes romantically involved with Susanna and makes advances, stirring the jealousy of her former lover Sister Theresa, Karin Well, who had hoped to regain authority within the community. As the Mother Superior’s tuberculosis worsens, Theresa takes temporary command and uses her position to punish Susanna, spreading rumors that she is possessed by the Devil and confining her in squalid conditions. She orders cruelties to isolate and torment the young woman, insisting she is driving out the evil from within.

The Monsignor, Martin Philips, hears rumors of possession and decides to investigate, sending his personal exorcist to the convent. Susanna is restrained, interrogated, and kept in a cell as the inquiry unfolds, while Theresa pushes for harsher, ritualistic measures meant to cleanse her body and soul. After the Mother Superior dies, Susanna is accused of causing her death by witchcraft, setting the stage for a formal trial in which she is charged with consorting with Satan. What follows is a stark exploration of faith under pressure, power struggles within a cloistered world, and a young woman who must endure judgement from both the nuns and church authorities.

Convent of Sinners Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Convent of Sinners (1986): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does the Mother Superior become romantically interested in Susanna?

The Mother Superior is sexually attracted to Susanna from the moment she arrives at the convent. As the leader of the community, she uses her position of authority to make advances toward the vulnerable young woman. This forbidden attraction creates tension with Sister Theresa, who had been the Mother Superior's former lover and hoped to regain influence over her.

Q2

Why does Theresa target Susanna with such cruelty?

Theresa's hostility toward Susanna stems from jealousy and a desire for power. She was the Mother Superior's former lover and expected to regain authority once the Mother Superior's health declined. Instead, the Mother Superior became romantically focused on Susanna, causing Theresa to resent her. When Theresa finally gains temporary control due to the Mother Superior's tuberculosis, she uses this opportunity to punish Susanna and consolidate her own power.

Foreshadowing: Theresa had hoped to regain authority after being displaced by the Mother Superior's new romantic interests.

Q3

How does Theresa take control of the convent?

Theresa assumes temporary command when the Mother Superior's tuberculosis worsens and she becomes too ill to lead. This leadership transition gives Theresa the authority to act against Susanna. She exploits her position by spreading rumors of demonic possession, confining Susanna to squalid conditions, and ordering physical abuse, all while the Mother Superior is too weak to intervene.

Q4

Why does Theresa spread rumors that Susanna is possessed by the Devil?

Theresa invents the possession narrative to justify punishing Susanna and remove her as a rival for the Mother Superior's affection. By labeling Susanna as demonic, Theresa can legally order her confinement, torture, and isolation without appearing to act purely out of personal jealousy. This accusation gives religious legitimacy to her campaign of cruelty.

Q5

Why is Susanna accused of witchcraft after the Mother Superior dies?

After the Mother Superior dies from tuberculosis, Theresa accuses Susanna of causing her death through witchcraft. This is a calculated move to ensure Susanna faces formal church trial and probable execution. By blaming Susanna for the Mother Superior's death, Theresa eliminates her rival completely and transforms the narrative from personal jealousy into a matter of demonic heresy.

Q6

Why does Susanna's mother send her to the convent after the assault?

Susanna's mother witnessed her stepfather's crime and, rather than seeking justice or protecting her daughter, she pressures Susanna to enter a convent. The move is framed as protective, but it's actually coerced and against Susanna's will. This decision removes the 'shame' from the family while also abandoning Susanna to further suffering.

  • convent
  • assault

Q7

What happens during the exorcism ritual in the convent?

The Monsignor dispatches his personal exorcist after hearing rumors of possession. At Theresa's urging, the exorcist subjects Susanna to a holy-water cleansing ritual, essentially a traumatic physical procedure meant to 'drive out' the Devil. She is restrained, interrogated, and kept in a cell throughout the investigation, with Theresa pushing for increasingly harsh ritualistic measures.

Q8

Why doesn't anyone help Susanna escape the abuse?

Susanna is completely isolated within the convent's rigid hierarchy. The Mother Superior is too consumed by her own desires and illness to protect her, while Theresa actively orchestrates the persecution. The other nuns follow Theresa's orders, and church authorities like the Monsignor believe the possession narrative. Susanna has no allies and no way to defend herself against institutional abuse.

  • abuse
  • church authority

Q9

Why does the convent allow such brutality to continue unchecked?

The convent operates as an isolated world where power dynamics and personal vendettas override religious morality. Theresa exploits the secret nature of cloistered life, there's no external oversight. The Mother Superior's death leaves a power vacuum that Theresa fills with her false accusations. Church investigators arrive only after extreme rumors spread, and they believe the possession story rather than questioning the legitimacy of the proceedings.

Q10

What leads to Susanna's formal trial?

Susanna's trial begins after the Mother Superior dies and Theresa officially accuses her of causing the death through witchcraft. The Monsignor convenes the trial based on these accusations, charging Susanna with consorting with Satan. The proceedings reflect the mounting paranoia and persecution within the monastery, with the church authorities believing the false narrative constructed by Theresa.

Foreshadowing: Theresa spreads rumors of possession early on, building the false narrative that culminates in formal witchcraft accusations.
