Come and See

Flyora and another Belarusian boy dig up a rifle from a trench, defying the village elder who warns that it will arouse the suspicions of the occupying Germans. Their act marks their entry into the resistance, and their temerity is noticed by a passing Fw 189 reconnaissance aircraft that spots them overhead.

Partisans come to Flyora's house to conscript him against his mother's wishes. He is taken to a forest partisan camp and becomes a low-rank militiaman performing tasks such as chores.

Kosach, the camp commander, orders Flyora and several others to remain behind after the others leave to train for combat. Flyora walks into the forest weeping, realizing his future in the war is uncertain.

Flyora meets Glasha, an emotionally unstable adolescent nurse among the partisans. The forest is suddenly attacked by dive bombers and German paratroopers, forcing them to flee and hide, and they sleep under a tree that night.

Flyora and Glasha travel to Flyora's village, only to find it deserted. Glasha sees a pile of executed villagers behind Flyora's house and urges him to leave quickly, while Flyora clings to a hope that his family is alive somewhere.

Rubezh, a partisan fighter, rescues Flyora and Glasha and escorts them to meet the surviving villagers. The group begins to piece together what happened to the village and its people.

The village elder, badly burned, tells Flyora that his family's deaths are a consequence of digging up the rifle and warns again not to tempt fate. Overwhelmed by guilt, Flyora submerges his head in the bog, intending to end his life, but Glasha and the villagers intervene.

Rubezh leads Flyora and two other men to raid a warehouse for food, but it is unexpectedly guarded by German troops, forcing a retreat. During the escape, Flyora sees his two companions killed by a land mine.

Rubezh and Flyora coerce a Nazi-collaborating farmer to hand over his cow, hoping to move it toward safety. A German machine gun kills Rubezh and the cow during the exchange, and Flyora tries to steal a horse and cart, then hides his gun and Red Army jacket as SS troops approach and take him toward Perekhody village.

German troops and collaborators surround and occupy Perekhody. Flyora warns the town’s residents that they are being herded to their deaths, but he is forced into a barn church with them as the soldiers barricade the doors and scream.

The soldiers seal the church and ignite it, turning the space into a deadly inferno while the villagers scream. A young woman with a child exits the church, but the child is thrown back inside as she is dragged off to be raped.

A German officer holds a pistol to Flyora's head to pose for a photograph, then abandons him as the soldiers depart, leaving him to confront the aftermath of the massacre.
