In 1989, in Itmann, West Virginia, a college basketball player named Christy Salters steps into a local female boxing competition and, surprisingly, takes the top prize despite little formal training. Her raw talent catches the eye of James Martin, a local boxing coach who sees potential beyond the ring. With the help of promoter Larry, Christy is invited to train under James, and though she starts with ambivalence, the spark of success drives her to commit to the sport.

At the same time, Christy’s personal life becomes tangled. Her secret relationship with her high-school girlfriend Rosie strains under the weight of family expectations, while her mother Joyce wrestles with rumors about Christy’s sexuality, fueling tension that ripples through the household.

By 1993, Christy has moved to Apopka, Florida, where she and James run a gym. James’s grip over her life grows more controlling, yet their relationship turns intimate, complicating Christy’s identity and career. The couple marries, a union that pleases Christy’s family, especially Joyce, though James’s plans often fail to open doors for her in the professional boxing world. A pivotal meeting with Don King, a powerful promoter, eventually leads to a contract that catapults her career.

A string of high-profile wins follows. Christy defeats Lisa Holewyne in a bout that publicly exposes Christy’s jokes about an out lesbian, a moment that reveals insecurities behind her on‑screen bravado. Her ascent continues with a historic victory over Deirdre Gogarty in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand, a landmark event as the first female boxing match shown on pay-per-view television. The momentous year also sees her as the first woman on the cover of Sports Illustrated, solidifying her star status. Yet Don King cautions her about the dangers of swagger and patronizing attitudes toward competitors, sensing that such attitude could be a liability in the long run.

In 2003, at James’s suggestion, Christy agrees to face Laila Ali, even as she hides a higher weight class to take the challenge. Lisa is brought in to help train, but the bout ends in defeat. Behind the scenes, James’s controlling nature edges into physical abuse, a pattern that Jeff, a ringside supporter and gym trainer, begins to notice. The couple also slides into a cocaine habit, tightening the spiral of manipulation and dependence.

Christy opens up to her mother about the abuse and manipulation, including acts tied to filmed sex, only to have Joyce dismiss it as paranoia tied to drug use. By 2010, the relationship has deteriorated further. Jeff reveals that James has been siphoning money for years, prompting Christy to seek a way out and reconnect with Rosie for support—only to become the target of James’s stalking. He broadcasts intimate clips to peers and family before publicly accusing Christy of leaving him for Rosie. Defiant, Christy returns to the house, where James stabs her, mutilates her calf, and shoots her in the chest. A passerby rushes her to a hospital, where Joyce places the blame on Rosie.

During recovery, Christy reconciles with Lisa, and the two repair their strained relationship. Returning to her gym, she is embraced by Jeff and the staff, resuming boxing on her own terms, now free from James’s shadow. James is sentenced to twenty‑five years in prison for attempted second‑degree murder. The story concludes with intertitles revealing that Christy and Lisa married in 2017 and that Christy has become an advocate for victims of domestic violence.
