In the year 2027, a severe crisis of global female infertility has devastated societies worldwide, causing widespread chaos and despair. With families torn apart and hope dwindling, countries struggle to maintain order amidst the collapse of their systems.

The United Kingdom has transformed into the last bastion of stability, yet it is overwhelmed by asylum seekers. As the government enforces harsh measures, a militarized police state emerges that relentlessly hunts down and detains immigrants, leading to a society ruled by fear and despair.

Former activist turned bureaucrat Theo Faron finds himself disillusioned in this bleak reality. His painful past is revealed, marked by the loss of his son during a devastating flu pandemic in 2008, which deeply affects his outlook on life.

Theo becomes entangled with a group of immigrant rights activists known as 'The Fishes.' He is confronted by Julian Taylor, the group's leader and his estranged wife, who implores him to help secure transit papers for a young refugee named Kee.

Julian persuades Theo to take on the dangerous task of helping Kee with transit papers by offering him financial incentives. Theo learns that he must accompany Kee on the perilous journey, setting the stage for a life-threatening mission amidst societal chaos.

As Theo, Kee, and their companions attempt to escape towards the coast for a boat, they are ambushed by an armed militia. The encounter turns deadly when Julian is shot, leaving Theo and Kee in an even more precarious situation as they mourn her loss.

In the wake of Julian's death, Kee reveals a shocking truth to Theo: she is pregnant. This critical information adds urgency to their quest, as they aim to reach a rumored safe haven, the 'Human Project,' which may hold the key to restoring humanity's future.

Conflict arises as Luke of the Fishes persuades Kee to remain with them instead of going to the Human Project. Theo uncovers a sinister plot that reveals Julian's death was part of a scheme to use Kee's child as a political symbol in their revolutionary aims.

Determined to protect Kee, Theo devises an escape plan with help from his old friend Jasper Palmer, a former cartoonist. They aim to board a ship named Tomorrow, which is set to arrive near a refugee camp, but time is running out as dangers escalate.

As the situation escalates, Kee goes into labor in a makeshift shelter provided by a helper named Marichka. In an extraordinary moment of vulnerability, she gives birth to a baby girl even as war rages outside, encapsulating the dire stakes of their journey to safety.
