Lou Marazano, once a feared hit man, has been retired for twenty years, and his reputation has significantly diminished over time. He now lives a quieter life in modern-day Chicago, struggling financially to support his daughter after her ex-husband fails to pay child support.

Desperate to help his daughter, Lou asks Lorenzo Galante, the current local mob boss, for work. Though hesitant, Galante assigns him to eliminate witnesses who are expected to testify against the former mob boss, D'Agostino.

Lou carries out the murders of several witnesses. After killing Ralph Maloney's relative, Lou sends flowers to the widow, which prompts veteran cop Ralph Maloney to reopen an unsolved murder case from the early 1990s.

Ralph Maloney and his partner Elliot Walsh pry into the case, staking out one of the second targets. Lou is picked up at the crime scene but is released due to an alibi provided by his girlfriend and neighbors, raising suspicion.

Concerned that Lou might cooperate with the police, Galante orders his murder. Lou remains cautious and kills the crew sent to assassinate him, staying a step ahead of his former associates.

Lou confronts Galante at his bar, where Galante threatens Lou's family. Unfazed, Lou kills Galante in a showdown, then offers his gold watch to an elderly man before fleeing the scene.

Police identify Lou by the distinctive gold watch on the elderly witness, which leads to his arrest. Meanwhile, Lou collects his earnings and plans to leave the city with his daughter to escape the chaos.

Lou's police captain, who harbors secrets, shares crucial information privately with Walsh and Maloney before shooting both, revealing his corruption. Lou tails the corrupt captain, who then shoots both Maloney and Walsh in a betrayal.

During a gunfight, Maloney, with blurred vision from a head wound, mistakenly shoots and kills Walsh. Enraged and grief-stricken, Maloney pursues Lou, blaming him for Walsh's death.

Maloney catches up with Lou and confronts him. Lou draws a hidden pistol and kills Maloney in a final act of revenge, then walks off into the rainy night, leaving the chaos behind.
