Raja, a rich but illiterate man, enjoys a carefree life with his friends Ateet, Saraswati, Magne, and Buddhi. His mother repeatedly urges him to marry, but he resists, citing his neighbor's fate after marriage. The opening establishes the social pressure and his reluctance to settle down.

Ateet, jobless but in love with Brinda, asks her father for permission to marry. He faces the father’s initial hesitation, testing his commitment. The romance sets the stage for a complicated web of loyalties.

Brinda's father refuses at first, concerned about the future. He relents after Ateet is chosen to receive a US Diversity Visa, tying their fate to a distant opportunity. The marriage lingers on the cusp of possibility.

Ateet marries Brinda and departs for the United States, promising to bring her once papers are ready. Meanwhile Brinda begins to fall for Raja, and the two share an illicit, burgeoning affair. The path of loyalty and desire diverges for the characters.

Magne stays behind as his mother falls ill, realizing the depth of a mother’s love. He resolves to pursue employment abroad to support them, setting his own voyage into motion. The family’s welfare drives his choices.

Saraswati resents his feminine-sounding name and falls for Bishnu, a village girl. He decides to seek employment abroad after Bishnu's father challenges him to earn money. The quest to prove himself takes him far from home.

Buddhi is married but jobless, and his friends’ drinking incites him to beat his wife. This leads to a serious rift, with Buddhi's wife fleeing to her brother's house. The domestic pressures ripple through their circle.

During a clash involving Buddhi's brother-in-law, Champa criticises Raja. Yet she accepts Raja’s awkward marriage proposal, stepping into his life with a complicated mix of rising affection and potential manipulation. The wedding horizon reappears.

Champa initially brings happiness to Raja's family and seems to stabilize things. However, a twist unfolds as Champa and Aryan plot to kill Raja and elope, shattering the fragile balance. The alliance he hoped for proves perilous.

Infuriated by the plot against him, Raja relocates to Kathmandu in search of a fresh start. He leaves behind the earlier life Champa had promised, venturing into a city that holds new dangers and possibilities. The journey marks a turning point in his quest for security.

In Kathmandu, Raja reconnects with Magne, who cannot go abroad due to a manpower agency and has become a goon. This complicates Raja's plans and adds a perilous street-level dimension to their mission. The city’s underbelly tests their resolve.

Raja, Saraswati, Magne, and Buddhi locate Champa and Aryan and confront Ateet, who has become the groom for Champa. Ateet reveals that his return and the plotted scheme were designed to make Raja feel the pain of losing someone dear. The truth reframes the earlier conflicts.

Ateet ultimately marries Champa, and Raja withdraws from worldly life, becoming a hermit. The fallouts of love and deception push Raja into a stark, contemplative existence. The social circle settles into a new, quieter order.

Saraswati marries Bishnu, and Buddhi reconciles with his wife before going abroad for work.
