The film begins with an older Charles Chaplin reflecting on his life while narrating his autobiography. This sets the stage for a series of flashbacks that reveal the significant events and people that shaped his career and personal journey.

Chaplin recalls his mother's struggle as an actress, performing in front of an unyielding audience of army cadets. When her performance flops, a young Chaplin, just five years old, courageously takes the stage and wins over the crowd with his singing.

After the performance, young Charles and his mother return home to a harsh lifestyle. They share a meager meal of fish heads in a dilapidated home, highlighting the struggles they face as a family in poverty.

The British police come and seize young Charlie and his brother Sidney, placing them in a labor house. This separation from their mother leads them into a grim existence, marked by hunger and hardship in the labor house.

As teenagers, Charlie and Sidney escape the labor house, with Sidney guiding Charlie towards a new opportunity in show business. Sydney seeks employment for Charlie, and Charlie's captivating slapstick performance impresses a wealthy man.

During his rise in the entertainment industry, Chaplin meets Edna Purviance, falling deeply in love with her. However, much to his dismay, Edna declines his marriage proposal, prompting Chaplin to leave for America to seek new opportunities.

Upon arriving in America, Chaplin secures a job with Mack Sennett, known as The King of Comedy. He meticulously chooses his signature costume in the dressing room, which becomes the iconic Little Tramp character that catapults him to fame.

Chaplin marries Mildred Harris under the pretense of love, but their union is strained, hinting at the marriage being a quick solution to an unexpected pregnancy. Soon, they divorce, signaling a pattern in Chaplin's turbulent romantic life.

After breaking away from Mack Sennett due to creative differences, Chaplin partners with his brother Sidney to find new financing for his films. At a dinner meeting, he encounters actress Lillita McMurray, who he later casts in his works such as 'The Kid.'

Chaplin's romantic history continues as he marries Paulette Goddard, who eventually departs from him due to his obsessive focus on filmmaking. This marriage, like the others, showcases Chaplin's conflicts between love and his career.

In the epilogue, it's revealed that after receiving his Oscar, Chaplin returns to Switzerland, where he eventually is knighted in 1975 by Queen Elizabeth II. He passes away on Christmas Day at the age of 88, leaving behind a monumental legacy.
