Chaplin narrates the compelling life story of Charles Chaplin, a revolutionary figure in the film industry, as he prepares his autobiography alongside his older self, portrayed by Robert Downey Jr.. This captivating film takes us through Chaplin’s reflections, revealing his past through a series of poignant flashbacks.

The journey begins in the early days of Chaplin’s career, showcasing a moment when his mother, Hannah, a troubled and impoverished woman, performs in front of a rowdy audience of army cadets. Although her performance ends in boos, a brave five-year-old Charles takes the stage after her. His rendition enchants the soldiers, leaving them astounded by his confidence and talent. As he continues to hone his craft, he encounters Edna Purviance, an actress within his troupe, and falls for her, though she declines his proposal. Soon after, Chaplin embarks on a journey to America, where he is mentored by Mack Sennett, famously known as the “King of Comedy.” Here, he famously develops the character of the Little Tramp, which catapults him to stardom.

However, Chaplin’s life is not without difficulties. He marries Mildred Harris, a young actress, seemingly out of necessity rather than love, as she becomes pregnant. Their marriage ends in divorce, leading Chaplin to part ways with Sennett due to creative differences. During this tumultuous period, he crosses paths with Lillita McMurray, and soon he casts her in his films, including the classic, The Kid.

As Chaplin finds love again with Paulette Goddard, the strain of his obsessive dedication to filmmaking takes its toll, resulting in another separation. Meanwhile, he finds himself on the wrong side of law and politics, particularly with J. Edgar Hoover, who eventually forces Chaplin into exile during a trip to London due to scandals surrounding underage relationships.

Amidst this exile, Chaplin grapples with a sense of belonging, realizing that neither America nor London feels like home. He spends his later years living in Switzerland with his final wife, Oona Chaplin. The story culminates in 1972, when Chaplin is honored with an Academy Award, evoking a wave of nostalgia and emotion as the audience celebrates his contributions to film with the longest standing ovation in Academy history.
