After spending much of their time in the charming Yorkshire village of Knapely, Annie Clarke and Chris Harper are well-known figures in their close-knit community, often participating in activities at the local Women’s Institute and enjoying each other’s company. Their peaceful routine is disrupted when Annie’s husband, John, is diagnosed with terminal leukaemia, prompting Chris to become a regular visitor during hospital visits, offering her support and companionship during this difficult time.

One day, Chris finds herself frustrated with the uncomfortable couches in the hospital waiting room, which sparks an idea to raise funds for a better seating area. She notices a “girlie” calendar in a nearby mechanic’s shop, which inspires her to propose a bold and unconventional fundraising scheme to the women of the Knapely Women’s Institute. Her idea involves creating a calendar featuring the women of the local WI, discreetly posing nude while engaging in traditional activities like baking and knitting, blending humor, femininity, and a touch of rebellion.

Initially, her proposal is met with skepticism and disbelief, but Chris’s determination and enthusiasm persuade her fellow women to support her cause. Alongside Annie, nine other women agree to participate, despite their natural shyness. To bring the project to life, they enlist the help of Lawrence, a hospital worker and amateur photographer, whose artistic skills help capture their vulnerable yet empowering photos. Throughout the process, the women support each other, overcoming their insecurities and fostering a sense of camaraderie.

The head of the local Women’s Institute branch initially refuses to approve the calendar, deeming it inappropriate. However, Chris and Annie take their case to the national Women’s Institute congress in London, advocating passionately for their project. They eventually receive permission from the local leader to distribute and sell the calendar, which quickly gains popularity. The initial print run of 500 copies sells out rapidly, igniting media interest both nationally and internationally.

The media attention leads to an invitation for the women to appear on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno in Los Angeles, with all expenses paid. While Chris initially decides against attending, wanting to stay to care for her troubled teenage son, a scandalous story published by a paparazzi-journalist in News of the World prompts her to travel with the others to America. The exposure on the talk show elevates their story to global prominence, turning them into symbols of female empowerment and humor.

However, the intense publicity begins to strain their personal relationships, and during a photoshoot, tensions come to a head. Chris and Annie clash angrily, with Annie accusing Chris of neglecting her family and the family business to chase fame, while Chris feels Annie is overly self-righteous and basking in her own moral superiority. Despite these conflicts, they eventually reconcile and return to their normal lives, with a renewed appreciation for their friendship and community.

The story concludes with a heartwarming reveal: the calendars have raised over half a million pounds, which they use to build a dedicated leukemia wing at their local hospital, directly benefiting those like John fighting terminal illness. This inspiring ending underscores themes of friendship, community spirit, and the positive impact of bold, unconventional actions.
