Rani, portrayed by Kangana Ranaut, is a 21-year-old girl from a conservative Punjabi family residing in Rajouri Garden, Delhi. With her protective brother always by her side, her life is meticulously controlled. Just two days before her wedding, her fiancé, Vijay, played by Rajkummar Rao, unexpectedly meets her at a local café to break the news that he no longer wants to marry her, claiming he has fundamentally changed and that she no longer fits into his lifestyle. This shocking revelation sends Rani into a spiral of despair, locking herself in her room for an entire day.
Determined to reclaim her independence, Rani decides to embark on her honeymoon trip alone to explore Paris—the dream destination she has never visited—along with Amsterdam, a city significant to Vijay. After some initial reluctance, her parents give in, and she sets off on this journey of self-discovery.
Upon arriving in Paris, Rani encounters Vijayalakshmi, affectionately known as Vijay, played by Lisa Haydon, a lively spirit with a French/Spanish mother and an Indian father. Working at Rani’s hotel, Vijayalakshmi becomes an unexpected ally, guiding Rani through the challenges of her new environment. As Rani navigates the wonders of Paris, she reminisces about the constraints Vijay imposed on her life—prohibiting her from dancing and drinking—freed from such limitations, she indulges in the city’s vibrant offerings.
Rani’s adventurous spirit is tested as she accidentally sends a revealing selfie meant for Vijayalakshmi to Vijay instead. This blunder unknowingly prompts him to initiate a search for her. Feeling overwhelmed and wanting to return home after a few misadventures that include encounters with the police and a robber, Rani finds solace in her new friendship with Vijayalakshmi, who helps her discover the true essence of freedom.
The time soon comes for Rani to bid farewell to her newfound friend and continue her journey to Amsterdam. However, she faces an unexpected surprise at her hostel—a shared room with three men named Taka, Tim, and Oleksander. The initial shock gives way to camaraderie as they bond over shared experiences and delve into the vibrant world around them. Rani blossoms in this new environment, showcasing her independence by taking charge of her friends’ drunken escapades and even earning money at a cook-off by selling Gol Gappa.
As the group shares laughter and experiences, Rani learns invaluable lessons about cultural differences and the varied landscapes of life around the world. However, when they return from the cook-off, they encounter Vijay waiting at the hostel. His emotional apology pushes Rani into a difficult position as the situation escalates, prompting her friends to defend her fiercely as she asserts her right to say no.
Their next encounter is strained. Rani leaves abruptly, insisting that any further discussion must wait until they return to Delhi. Choosing to spend her last night in Amsterdam at a rock show, she ultimately realizes how much she has grown. Upon her return, she meets with Vijay at his home. In a moment of calm clarity, she silently hands him her engagement ring, symbolizing her newfound freedom and self-acceptance. With a sense of relief and newfound strength, Rani leaves Vijay’s house, ready to embrace the next chapter of her life.
