The Banger Sisters

As Suzette’s once care-free lifestyle as a bartender at Los Angeles’ famous Whisky a Go Go comes to an abrupt halt, courtesy of a young, nostalgia-hating corporate manager, she is left feeling lost, caught between the painful realities of aging and the urgent need for financial security. On a spontaneous decision, Suzette heads to Phoenix, Arizona, hoping to find solace with her former best friend, Vinnie, now known as Lavinia Kingsley. However, with no money to refuel her car after a breakdown at a service station, she reluctantly accepts a ride from Harry Plummer, a neurotic writer struggling with agoraphobia and desperate to rid himself of the oppressive influence of his father. In need of gas money, Suzette agrees to accompany him on his journey to Phoenix.

Upon reaching the city, Suzette has an unexpected encounter with Vinnie’s 17-year-old daughter, Hannah, which catalyzes a series of events that deeply resonate with her. After saving Hannah from a reckless group of friends who abandoned her following a traumatic LSD experience, Suzette cares for the shaken teenager in Harry’s hotel room. As dawn breaks, she returns Hannah to her affluent family, skillfully fabricating a story about the teen’s sudden illness caused by an ill-fated night of mixing red and white wine.

Stepping into Lavinia’s new life, Suzette is struck by the drastic change in her old friend over two decades. The spirited Vinnie she once knew has transformed into a composed, society-approved wife and mother, working hard to fit into the expectations placed upon her. Lavinia’s husband, Raymond, an ambitious lawyer with dreams of entering politics, remains blissfully unaware of her tumultuous history.

Though initially suspicious of Suzette’s abrupt return, Lavinia attempts to bribe her into silence. Yet, as their old friendship begins to rekindle, Lavinia gradually opens up, reminiscing about shared moments from their past. One fateful night, shedding her constrictive attire, she joins Suzette in a nostalgic dance, reconnecting with the carefree spirit of their youth. Together, they explore a treasure trove of memories, discovering a stash of Polaroids from their wild days, and unwittingly triggering the smoke detector while sharing a joint, which awakens the household.

After a minor car accident involving Ginny, a tension-filled atmosphere looms over the group at the hospital. Amidst a chaotic family argument spurred by Hannah’s sharp remarks, Suzette feels the weight of their shared challenges pressing down on her. In a moment of vulnerability, she decides to return to Los Angeles and calls Harry to express her intentions. But Lavinia proves to be relentless, leading them both atop a “Got Milk?” billboard where they share a heartfelt conversation, gradually easing their past grievances.

When Suzette and Lavinia arrive at Harry’s hotel room, they find it desolate, suggesting that he has left, leaving behind only a cryptic note. Panic ensues when Suzette recalls his previous departure with a firearm. The pair searches for him at a local cemetery, where they discover Harry confronting his father’s grave. In a flurry of emotions, particularly for Vinnie, a confrontation leads to a car accident, resulting in Suzette discharging a bullet into the air to help Harry face his inner demons.

As this emotionally charged chapter draws to a close, Lavinia’s family collectively acknowledges her humanity. During her graduation speech, Hannah challenges the paradigm of “fake,” encouraging her audience, which includes teachers and parents, to strive for authenticity and sincerity in their lives.

The following day, Suzette embarks on her journey back to Los Angeles, accompanied by Harry, who has begun to see her as his inspiring muse.
