Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

In 1899 Wyoming, Butch Cassidy is introduced as the clever, talkative leader of the Outlaw Hole-in-the-Wall Gang. His closest ally is Sundance Kid, a quiet and deadly sharpshooter. They return to their hideout only to find their gang has replaced Cassidy as leader with Harvey Logan.

Harvey Logan challenges Cassidy to a knife fight over the gang's leadership, which Cassidy wins through trickery. Cassidy then proposes robbing a Union Pacific train twice, planning to make the second robbery more profitable by catching the train unawares.

Cassidy and his gang successfully execute the first train robbery, seizing a substantial amount of loot. They celebrate their success at a local brothel, while law enforcement efforts to catch them remain ineffective, with the town marshal struggling to organize a posse.

Meanwhile, Sundance visits his lover, schoolteacher Etta Place. The following morning, Cassidy joins Sundance and Etta for a ride on his new bicycle, highlighting his personal relationships apart from his criminal activities.

During the second train robbery, Cassidy uses too much dynamite, destroying the safe and scattering money everywhere. Lawmen from a six-man posse arrive quickly, forcing Cassidy and Sundance to hide in a brothel while they are chased through the countryside.

The posse, including Indian tracker Lord Baltimore and lawman Joe Lefors, pursues Cassidy and Sundance. The outlaws evade capture by jumping into a river from a cliff, learning that the law enforcement agency is paid by Union Pacific to hunt them down to the death.

Cassidy persuades Sundance and Etta to flee to Bolivia, believing it to be a sanctuary for outlaws. Upon arrival, Sundance is disappointed and regards Bolivia with disdain, but Cassidy remains optimistic about their new life as bank robbers in South America.

In Bolivia, Cassidy, Sundance, and Etta, with Etta learning Spanish, begin successful bank robberies under the alias Los Bandidos Yanquis. Though confident, they become paranoid after spotting a man with a white skimmer, suspecting Hunter's posse is still after them.

Cassidy and Sundance decide to try a legitimate job as payroll guards for a mining company. Their attempt ends tragically when they are ambushed by bandits, resulting in the death of their boss and Cassidy shooting his first person.

Realizing that a straight life is not for them, Cassidy and Sundance steal a payroll and flee. They are recognized by a boy who alerts the police, leading to a gunfight during which Cassidy is wounded. They then escape into the countryside with intentions of heading to Australia.

The police summon the Bolivian Army as Cassidy and Sundance make a desperate charge out of their hiding place with guns blazing. Surrounded at all vantage points, the film ends abruptly with gunfire and a freeze-frame of the two outlaws, signifying their final confrontation.
