Brokeback Mountain

In Wyoming in 1963, the life of two cowboys becomes unexpectedly intertwined. Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist are hired by rancher Joe Aguirre to herd his sheep across the high pastures of Brokeback Mountain for the summer. After a night of heavy drinking, Jack makes a pass at Ennis; though Ennis is initially reluctant, he eventually opens up and the two men share a sexual and emotional connection in the tent. What begins as a charged moment deepens into a bond that shapes the choices they make long after the season ends. Their friendship is marked by secrecy and a growing sense of burden, and a late-night brawl before they part hints at the toll of their feelings.

Back home, Ennis marries his longtime fiancée, Alma Beers, and they raise two daughters, Alma Jr. and Jenny. Jack returns the following summer, hoping to work again, but Aguirre—having witnessed what happened on Brokeback Mountain—refuses to hire men who are not strictly “in step with the ranch.” Jack heads to Texas, where he meets rodeo rider Lureen Newsome and eventually marries her; they have a son, and Jack begins a life that is at odds with what he secretly longs for. Despite the appearance of normalcy, the memories of Brokeback Mountain persist, casting a shadow over both men’s relationships and sense of self.

Four years pass before Jack travels back to Wyoming to see Ennis. Their reunion is immediate and intense; they share a passionate kiss that Alma, unaware at first, discovers. In a motel room, Jack urges them to imagine a life together, but Ennis remains haunted by a childhood memory—his father showing him a man who was tortured and killed for suspected homosexuality—which reinforces his determination to protect his family at all costs. The two men meet only sporadically afterward, slipping away for private fishing trips while their marriages slowly deteriorate. Lureen’s father shows open disdain for Jack, creating additional friction in the family. Alma and Ennis divorce in 1975.

Jack drives back to Wyoming, proposing they abandon their separate lives and live together, but Ennis refuses to leave his children. Alma marries Monroe, the manager of the grocery store where she works, while Ennis pursues a brief romance with a waitress named Cassie. Jack and Lureen befriend Randall and Lashawn Malone, and there are insinuations of a possible affair between Jack and Randall. After a tryst masquerading as a fishing trip, Ennis tells Jack that he cannot see him for months due to work demands; the lovers part with a painful, mutual ache.

A pale reminder of Jack’s fate arrives in a postcard Ennis had sent that is returned stamped “Deceased.” Ennis calls Jack’s number, and Lureen answers with the devastating news that Jack died when a tire exploded in his face. Ennis envisions the moment of Jack’s murder in his mind, imagining men beating him with a tire iron, and Lureen confirms that Jack requested his ashes to be scattered on Brokeback Mountain.

Ennis later visits Jack’s parents, hoping to fulfill that wish. Jack’s father insists that the ashes be laid to rest in the family plot, while his mother allows Ennis to see Jack’s old bedroom. In a moving moment, Ennis discovers the shirt he thought he left on the mountain, hidden inside one of Jack’s shirts—an intimate symbol of their shared past. Ennis embraces the shirts and quietly weeps; Jack’s mother permits him to keep them, a bittersweet keepsake of a lost future.

Years pass, and Ennis lives a solitary, reclusive life in a trailer. His daughter Alma Jr. visits with news of her engagement to Kurt, a man who works in the oil fields. He hesitates at first, then agrees to attend the wedding, torn between duty and memory. Alma Jr. leaves, forgetting her jacket, which Ennis places in the closet alongside the two shirts—Jack’s shirt now nestled inside Ennis’s. A postcard of Brokeback Mountain is tacked to the closet door, a haunting reminder of what could have been. With tears in his eyes, Ennis gazes at the mementos and whispers, > Jack, I swear…
