In London, a social scavenger-hunt party hosted by Monica Strong’s aunt sets the stage for a web of loyalties, secrets, and daring ambitions. Monica Strong, and her married lover, Harry Rawlinson, Ralph Forbes, attend the gathering with Carrie Valentine, Monica’s aunt, Irene Browne. Carrie issues a curious tie-breaking challenge: women must find a man married more than five years who has remained faithful, and men must find a woman over twenty who has never had a love affair. What begins as a playful game quickly pulls everyone into choices that test duty, desire, and the laws of love.

Monica heads off to find her father, Sir Christopher Strong, Colin Clive, a man who adores his wife and daughter. Harry tailwinds after her on a motorbike, but a crash changes the course of their night. Lady Cynthia Darrington, Katharine Hepburn, a fearless aviator who has never known a love affair, intervenes and ends up accompanying them. Cynthia, with an air of both mastery and restraint, meets Christopher, a family friend and a devoted father, and she takes him flying, sparking a connection that surprises them both.

As the party’s factions swirl, Cynthia and Monica become close friends. Elaine Strong, Billie Burke, Elaine fears that this new bond could threaten the delicate balance of her own marriage and the family’s harmony, insisting that Cynthia’s presence might not be the simple boon it appears to be. The tension between friendship and romantic possibility weighs on Elaine, who worries about the widening rift it could cause within the family.

When Monica returns home intoxicated after a night out, Elaine presses Harry to consider his duty and distance himself from Monica. He concedes, signaling the fragile lines that separate passion from propriety. Christopher then asks Cynthia to persuade Monica to accompany the family on a Cannes trip. Monica agrees, but only if Christopher would allow her to witness Cynthia in an aerial show. At the villa, Elaine anticipates having her husband to herself, only to be crushed by the news that Cynthia will join them after all.

Two weeks pass and the mood darkens. Monica’s sadness deepens as the two lovers—Christopher and Cynthia—share a look that signals more than mere friendship. Elaine departs with a headache, sensing a hidden bond forming. Monica, seeking solace, allows a stranger named Carlo, Jack La Rue, to kiss her, while Christopher, who longs to be alone with Cynthia, hands Carlo the keys to take his daughter home.

The truth of their feelings comes into the open: Christopher and Cynthia confess a profound love, but vow to meet no more. Elaine, shattered by what she believes she’s witnessed, watches with a heavy heart as they part.

Cynthia enters a world-spanning race around the globe, beginning in New York City. A distraught Monica arrives with troubling news: Harry has divorced and refuses to marry her because she confessed her night with Carlo. Cynthia convinces Monica that Harry will forgive her, and she urges Christopher not to read the letter Monica has written. Christopher, torn between loyalty and longing, reads it and hastens to meet Monica just before she departs for New York. Their farewell is charged with unspoken tenderness.

Across the journey, Cynthia completes the race and lands in San Francisco, while Christopher, now on a mission to Washington, calls from New York to say he’s waiting. The reunion between Cynthia and Christopher finally becomes a vow spoken aloud—one of passion tempered by a pledge of never asking the other to give up who they are. The two share a kiss that feels like a reckoning, and a lamp lights the moment as a symbol of the life they might have chosen.

The couple’s modern, unorthodox love is tested against the expectations of family and society. Harry and Monica reconcile, and Christopher returns from the States, ready to support their growing family, though Elaine refuses to attend the marriage registry with them. Months pass, and a quiet life at an out-of-the-way inn becomes a stage for further confession: Cynthia and Christopher admit to loving each other, while Monica and Harry participate in the same ritual of shared history they once sought to escape.

On the domestic front, Monica and Harry announce that they’re expecting a child, leaving everyone in a mood of warm celebration. Elaine, for all her control, thanks Cynthia for being a steadfast friend to Monica. Yet Cynthia bears a heavier burden—her doctor has advised against flying due to pregnancy, and she contemplates telling Christopher that night. He, however, remains with the family, choosing to celebrate the life around him.

The climactic moment arrives as Cynthia writes to Christopher that she plans to break the world altitude record at around 33,000 feet, and does not intend to return. She tucks away a final, hopeful line that hints at an unbreakable bond: “Courage can conquer even love.” The ascent becomes a meditation on memory, courage, and the cost of pursuing a dream. As the altimeter climbs to over 34,000 feet, memories flood back, and she weeps behind her oxygen mask, ultimately losing consciousness as the plane spirals toward a fiery crash.

Back in London, the world pays quiet tribute to her extraordinary legacy with a winged statue that stands as a lasting monument to a woman who chose to live, and to love, on her own terms. The film closes on a note of suspended fate and the enduring power of courage in the face of impossible choices.

Courage can conquer even love.

But not love, she adds.

Give up this altitude flight, for me.
