The movie opens with Gale Sayers, a Bears rookie running back, arriving at team practice as an errant punt rolls toward him. Fellow rookie Brian Piccolo goes to retrieve the ball and Sayers casually flips it to him. Before Sayers meets with George Halas in his office, Piccolo playfully claims Halas has a hearing problem, and Sayers responding with mischief of his own—placing mashed potatoes on Halas’s chair just as Piccolo belts out his alma mater’s fight song.
During practice, Piccolo struggles while Sayers shines, and the two are soon roommates—a rarity during the era’s racial tensions. Piccolo fears he may not have earned his spot, but Sayers gently reminds him with a line that becomes a touchstone of their bond:
If you didn’t make the team, we wouldn’t be placed together as roommates.
Their friendship grows both on the field and off, extending to their wives, Joy Piccolo and Linda Sayers. Sayers quickly emerges as a standout, yet a knee injury during a game against the San Francisco 49ers threatens his career. To help him recover, Piccolo brings a weight machine to his house. In Sayers’s absence, Piccolo steps up, rushing for 160 yards in a 17–16 victory over the Los Angeles Rams and receiving the game ball. A playful park challenge follows, with Sayers stumbling yet ultimately winning as Piccolo clinches the starting fullback job, ensuring they would soon share the field more than ever.
Piccolo’s weight loss signals a troubling decline in his performance, and he is soon sent to a hospital for tests. Halas later informs Sayers that Piccolo has cancer and will undergo part of a lung removal. In a stirring moment, Sayers pledges to his teammates that they will win the game for Piccolo and present him with the game ball. When the team visits the hospital, Piccolo lightens the mood with a joke about the old movie line not being “let’s blow one for the Gipper.”
After a game against the St. Louis Cardinals, Joy visits and reveals that Piccolo will need another surgery for his tumor. Following the emotional moment of Sayers receiving the George S. Halas Most Courageous Player Award, he dedicates the honor to Piccolo, telling the crowd, “I love Brian Piccolo, and I’d like all of you to love him, too. And tonight, when you hit your knees, please ask God to love him.” In a heartfelt phone call, Sayers recalls giving Piccolo a pint of blood during his critical condition. Piccolo dies with his wife by his side. The film closes with a flashback of Piccolo and Sayers running together in the park, while Halas narrates that Piccolo died at age 26 and is remembered not for how he died, but for how he lived.
