Natalie is an academically focused student who dreams of earning a tennis scholarship to Duke University. She spends time with several classmates at an outdoor gathering spot known as The Brick, where she forms a connection with Raff, a new transfer student who quickly becomes part of her circle. In chemistry class, Natalie is paired with Keith, a carefree classmate who views life with a rebellious, unstructured streak. When Natalie asks for help with a lab report, Keith takes her out of the school to trespass into an office building, pulling her into his easygoing, rule‑bending world. Though Raff becomes Natalie’s boyfriend, Keith keeps pursuing Natalie and keeps insisting they are only friends, calling his advances “non-dates.”

As the days go by, Keith and Natalie grow closer, and she agrees to go on more non-dates with him. Their growing bond unsettles Raff, who starts to feel left out. A night of friction arrives when Keith and Natalie clash just as Al and a boy named Billy show up. Worried about Keith’s reliability, Natalie tries to reach him, but he stops coming to school for several days. When she searches for his address, she recalls his claim of living in an old white house with a big porch and decides to visit anyway. The address proves to be false, and two weeks later Keith resurfaces, leaving Natalie both irritated and more determined to know the truth. She breaks into his locker to learn his real address and, as punishment, is suspended from school. A visit to Keith’s house yields a cold reception; he refuses to see her, so Natalie hides in the back of his yellow truck to wait. That night, Keith drives to the cliff again, and Natalie, finally honest about her feelings, tells him she loves him. In a moment of vulnerability, they make love in the back of the truck, and Natalie returns home elated, hoping for a future together. Yet Keith asks her to forget what happened, leaving Natalie crushed.

With her tennis rankings slipping, Natalie loses hope of maintaining her Duke scholarship—and she ends her relationship with Raff. On the road, she discovers that Billy died of cancer, and that Billy and Keith had undergone chemotherapy together, revealing that Keith is battling cancer himself. A late‑night appearance at her house follows, and Natalie urges Keith to pursue the dreams he still has left. They drive to the airport so he can chase those dreams, and he finally speaks openly about his true feelings. Natalie promises to be by his side for as long as possible, and the two share a hopeful kiss as the scene fades.

The story then leaps to the future: Natalie graduates, carrying forward many of Keith’s habits and a stubborn drive to seize life. She now works as a grease monkey and continues to drive Keith’s yellow truck. Rather than putting his memory to rest, she intends to honor him by following his dream, driving to London, Ontario to enter his beloved yellow truck in the annual truck show, a testament to the life they imagined together and the impact he left behind.
