Jennifer escapes her abusive boyfriend and disappears into the night, seeking safety away from his control. She gives her baby up for adoption and hops on the next bus out of town. The future remains uncertain as she vanishes into the cold night.

She ends up on the grim streets of Toronto during a bitter winter, where survival becomes the daily rule. Ola, a streetwise prostitute, sees potential in the frightened newcomer and takes her in. A fragile bond forms as Jennifer begins to learn the harsh realities of life on the edge.

Ola witnesses Hassan murder another prostitute, and the sense of danger deepens. She refuses to testify, knowing Hassan has dangerous associates who would silence her. A police officer, McClaren, questions her, and she is deported to the United States after the interrogation.

Ola eventually makes her way back to Toronto, where Jennifer greets her with relief. Grateful but pressed to repay Ola, Jennifer asks for help to survive, and Ola takes her under her wing. She begins learning the ropes of prostitution under Ola's guidance.

Her abusive boyfriend locates her with deadly intent, bent on punishing her for leaving and giving up their child. In a desperate act of self-defense, she shoots him and leaves his body in a local alley. The act marks a dangerous step deeper into the life Ola warned her about.

Believing Hassan has taken Jennifer, Ola grabs a gun and goes to Hassan's house to demand Jennifer's whereabouts. After a tense confrontation, Hassan beats Ola and leaves her for dead on the riverbank. She survives long enough to reach the hospital, though badly hurt.

Sheila, one of Hassan's girls, finally admits she saw everything and says Ola is in the hospital near death. Jennifer races to Ola's side, torn between gratitude and vengeance. Ola lies comatose as the fight for her life continues.

Fueled by Ola's vow for revenge, Jennifer takes Ola's gun and goes to Hassan to demand Jennifer's safety or information. She shoots Hassan several times but stops short of killing him, a moment that leads to his arrest by McClaren soon after.

Jennifer returns to Ola's bedside to report her vengeance. Ola seems to awaken briefly, but the monitors betray the truth as her heart flatlines and she dies. Jennifer grieves the loss of the mother figure she found in Ola.

The film ends with Jennifer packing keepsakes of Ola and boarding a bus to an unknown destination. The future remains uncertain, yet she has reclaimed agency through the acts she chose. The fate of the pair remains shrouded, consistent with the film's somber mood.
