In a remote Mojave desert town, the ruthless entrepreneur John Madec showcases his extravagant all-terrain vehicle, flaunting its $500,000 price tag while bribing the local sheriff to obtain a permit for hunting an endangered desert bighorn sheep. The sheriff, seizing a lucrative opportunity, directs seasoned tracker Ben to guide Madec into the rugged canyon landscape of Shiprock, a location that lies an hour from town. Meanwhile, Ben’s girlfriend, Laina, is in Colorado, excelling in her college swimming scholarship and skillfully handling the gun gifted to her by Ben.

As they traverse the harsh terrain, Madec’s contempt for Ben’s modest roots becomes progressively evident, particularly as he mocks Ben regarding Laina. When Ben presses for the hunting permit, Madec, instead, attempts to entice him with a hefty bribe, which Ben reluctantly accepts. The tension escalates into chaos when Madec, embodying a shoot-first-ask-questions-later mentality, inadvertently shoots Charlie, a senior prospector, all while cunningly shifting the blame to Ben, thus igniting a harrowing chain of events.

Madec’s subsequent proposal to conceal the crime in exchange for Ben’s acquiescence establishes a perilous entanglement where their sinister game of cat and mouse takes shape. As Madec maliciously sabotages Ben’s emergency transponder, his true desires unfold: to manipulate Ben as a pawn in a diabolical scheme of deceit and murder.

When Ben adamantly refuses to cooperate, Madec’s facade begins to crack, becoming increasingly aggressive as he orders Ben to strip naked and leave him stranded in the desert, 45 miles from civilization. As the sun sets ominously, Ben seeks shelter in Charlie’s hidden underground retreat, only for it to be destroyed by Madec using Charlie’s own dynamite, signaling a turning point in their grim rivalry.

With his choices dwindling, Ben fortuitously discovers a “treasure map” belonging to Charlie, instilling within him a resolve to avenge the old prospector’s death. As he navigates the perilous landscape, he unearths a wrist-brace slingshot and marble game pieces hidden among Charlie’s belongings, which he cleverly appropriates for his survival.

In a shrewd effort to outwit Madec, Ben heads toward a sentimental water grotto linked to both him and Laina, only to find it barren as the night envelops the desert. Unfazed, he relies on ingenuity and his makeshift slingshot to counter Madec’s firepower, bringing a semblance of justice to the desolate scenario.

In a twist of fate, Madec manages a clever escape during a bathroom interlude, leveraging his one phone call to hijack a helicopter he had previously arranged. Meanwhile, Ben returns to Laina, filled with a solemn promise that resonates through their tranquil evening and carries them into slumber. However, unbeknownst to them, Madec lurks in the shadows, his ominous presence fueling the air with tension as he stalks their lives under the veil of night.

Just when despair seems inevitable, Laina springs into action, instinctively retrieving the firearm from Ben that he had previously entrusted to her. With unwavering aim and determination, she confronts Madec, taking him down with the same gun passed from one trustworthy hand to another. Yet, even in his demise, Madec’s wickedness lingers. It falls to Ben to deliver the final blow, bringing closure to the harrowing ordeal with swift and decisive action.
