From the very beginning, Elly feels the absence of her younger sister deeply. A phone call from her mother reveals that they discovered a diary filled with dried flowers in her sister’s room—a meaningful gift from Elly herself. This heartwarming reminder of love ignites a longing for connection as her family expresses their desire to talk to her soon. While immersed in the study of a particular plant’s overgrowth, a spirited girl named Alex offers her assistance. Having missed school, she wants to engage in something worthwhile. Elly graciously welcomes her help, and together, they explore the enchanting desert landscape. Before heading home, Alex notices the tattoo on Elly’s hand, which Elly reveals is of a buttercup—a symbol that links back to her sister, as her tool also bore the engraving of the flower.

As Alex returns home, Elly lingers a while longer to confront the intense emotions overwhelming her. Her moment of introspection is shattered when she witnesses a plane crash just moments away. Rushing to aid, she finds herself face-to-face with a man wielding a gun who threatens her life. As she scrambles back into her car, her escape is thwarted when the tires get stuck. In a desperate bid to save herself, she proposes to guide the man, Tomas (who turns out to be the pilot) through the treacherous desert, hoping he will spare her life. In a twist of fate, they end up traversing the arid landscape together, burdened with a backpack full of drugs.

The next morning, Sheriff Jose, who also happens to be Alex’s father, conducts his usual patrol in the desert. He picks up Alex on his way to school, only to receive a concerning report about a botanist who had gone missing in the area. Though Alex expresses her willingness to assist her father in finding the missing woman, he insists on dropping her off at school. Meanwhile, Guillermo, the man responsible for receiving the drug, embarks on a frantic search upon realizing the grave consequences of its loss.

“Borrego” intricately weaves together the narratives of these four individuals, revealing how some seek justice while others find themselves ensnared in an unescapable dark world. As Elly and Tomas move through the grueling desert heat, Elly proposes a rest, but when Tomas briefly turns away, she seizes the opportunity to flee. However, her escape is short-lived as he captures her again, tying her hands for their continued journey.

The sweltering sun bears down on them, forcing Tomas to collapse from exhaustion. Recognizing their dire situation, Elly urges him to seek refuge in a canyon to reach Borrego Springs where they could find a vehicle for him to complete his task. With no better plans in sight, Tomas reluctantly complies. As night falls, they share a campfire, exchanging intimate life stories that reveal their vulnerabilities.

Tomas, once a teacher, was led to a life of crime due to his father’s illness and the financial burdens that followed. Elly confesses her own harrowing past, revealing that she resorted to pills to cope with her grief after a tragic accident claimed her sister’s life—a guilt that continues to haunt her. Tomas imparts wisdom that echoes through generations: it is essential to run with purpose rather than aimlessly.

Under the cover of night, Elly cunningly manages to cut herself free, steals a bottle of water, and escapes his grasp. As Sheriff Jose searches for her, he stumbles upon a grim scene: two bodies lying near her abandoned car, slain by Guillermo. The sheriff’s instincts tell him that danger looms nearby, and he cannot rely on backup.

In the midst of chaos, Alex, determined to find her father, locates his car and calls out for him. A heartfelt reunion takes place as they emerge from perilous circumstances, but not without seeking a way to rescue Elly. As the sheriff urges Alex to find help in town, she feels a stronger pull to locate Elly first.

Having broken free, Elly unknowingly crosses paths with Guillermo, igniting a frantic chase to escape his clutches. Just as Elly spots her salvation—Alex’s bike—Guillermo captures her and endangers both their lives.
