Set in the Russian Empire in 1919, the story follows young idealist Osip Zadunaisky, whose life takes an unexpected turn when he encounters Ibrahim Bender, a notorious con artist. Despite their differing backgrounds, Bender persuades Osip to join him on a quest to find a valuable, diamond-encrusted golden scepter hidden somewhere in town. To succeed, they must navigate a world of deceit, outsmarting White Guard officers and local mafia, all while Osip learns the art of charming deception and subtle intimidation from his unlikely partner.
