After the disastrous defeat at Poltava in 1709, King Karl XII stays in the Ottoman town of Bender awaiting the sultan’s aid against Peter the Great. The Turks see him as a costly guest and plot his removal. To force his exit, the sultan offers a princess in marriage, sending soldiers Lagercrona and Kruus to escort her across dangerous terrain, as rival Swedes try to thwart them, leading to the chaotic “Kalabalik” in Bender.
