What Happens in The Sting II: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of The Sting II (1983) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

In 1940, with the Great Depression behind them and World War II just beginning, Fargo Gondorff is released from prison and reassembles his cronies for another daring con, driven by a desire to avenge the murder of his lifelong pal and fellow con artist Kid Colors. Gondorff's plan relies on a bold scheme from his young protégé, Jake Hooker, who attempts a scam on the wealthy Countess Veronique, only to discover she is a grifter herself named Veronica.

To pull it off, Gondorff and Hooker stage a boxing con aimed at two powerful targets: Lonnegan, the ruthless banker and gangster who wants revenge for a previous con, and Gus Macalinski, a wealthy local racketeer. Hooker pretends to be a boxer on the verge of taking a fall, while Macalinski is hoodwinked into losing hundreds of thousands and coaxed by Lonnegan to alter his original wager.

As the con unfolds, one gangster moves against the other, and Gondorff and Hooker make their way to the train station with a bag full of money and tickets out of town, all while Veronica delivers a final twist that reshapes the outcome.

The Sting II Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about The Sting II (1983): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does Gondorff target Lonnegan and Macalinski for his con?

Gondorff targets both criminals to avenge the murder of his lifelong friend Kid Colors. The con is designed so that at least one of them is behind Kid Colors' death, while the other will be drawn into their web. The boxing con allows Gondorff to both extract money from his targets and determine which one ordered the killing.

Foreshadowing: Gondorff explicitly states his goal is revenge when he reassembles his cronies at the start of the film.

  • revenge
  • kid colors murder
  • lonnegan
  • macalinski
  • gondorff motive
Q2

Who is Veronica really?

Veronica is actually a grifter, not the wealthy Countess Veronique she pretends to be. She was encountered when Jake Hooker attempted to scam her, only to discover she was running her own con. She then joins Gondorff's crew and becomes an integral part of the boxing con operation.

Foreshadowing: Hooker's initial attempt to trick Countess Veronique reveals she is more than she appears.

  • veronica
  • veronique
  • countess
  • grifter
  • con artist
Q3

How does the boxing con work in the film?

The boxing con works by having Hooker pose as a boxer who is about to throw a big fight. This draws Macalinski's interest, and he is hoodwinked into placing large bets. Lonnegan is also drawn in and pressures Macalinski to alter his wager. As the two gangsters turn on each other, Gondorff and Hooker extract the money from both marks.

Foreshadowing: The crew explicitly discusses targeting both criminals with the boxing con to ensure one of them is entangled.

  • boxing con
  • hooker boxer
  • macalinski bet
  • lonnegan wager
Q4

What happens to Macalinski during the con?

Macalinski is hoodwinked into losing hundreds of thousands of dollars through the staged boxing bet. When Lonnegan realizes the con is unfolding, he pressures Macalinski to alter his original wager, hoping to tilt the odds in his favor. The scheme ultimately leaves Macalinski financially devastated while the con artists profit.

Foreshadowing: The crew plans to leverage Macalinski's greed and draw him into increasingly larger bets.

  • macalinski loses money
  • bankrupt
  • con scheme
Q5

What is Veronica's final twist at the train station?

At the train station, as Gondorff and Hooker prepare to escape with the money, Veronica delivers a final twist that reframes the con's outcome. The revelation complicates who actually benefits from the scheme and tests the loyalties of everyone involved.

Foreshadowing: The timeline indicates the twist complicates the payoff and tests the relationships among the characters.

  • veronica twist
  • train station ending
  • final con twist
Q6

Why does Lonnegan try to change the wager?

Lonnegan attempts to change the wager because he senses the con is collapsing and wants to salvage the situation. By pressuring Macalinski to alter the original bet, Lonnegan hopes to tilt the odds back in his favor and recover his losses. This move accelerates the conflict between the two gangsters and drives the con toward its climax.

Foreshadowing: Lonnegan's office scene shows him attempting to salvage the situation with counter-moves.

  • lonnegan wager
  • change bet
  • con climax
Q7

What happened to Kid Colors and why does it matter?

Kid Colors was Gondorff's lifelong friend and fellow con artist who was murdered. Gondorff's entire motivation for assembling the new con is to avenge this death and find out which of his targets, Lonnegan or Macalinski, was responsible for ordering the hit.

Foreshadowing: Gondorff explicitly explains his goal is revenge for Kid Colors when he reunites with his crew.

  • kid colors
  • murder
  • avenge
  • gondorff friend
Q8

How do Gondorff and Hooker escape with the money?

After the con reaches its climax and the double-cross plays out between the gangsters, Gondorff and Hooker make their way to the train station with a bag full of money and tickets out of town. With the money secured through their careful planning and Veronica's misdirection, they prepare to vanish and leave town.

Foreshadowing: The timeline builds toward the train station as the final stage where the escape plays out.

  • escape train
  • money bag
  • leave town
Q9

What causes the conflict between Lonnegan and Macalinski?

The conflict arises because the boxing con deliberately sets up both gangsters to turn on each other. As Macalinski loses money through the staged fight, Lonnegan pushes him to change the wager, suspecting something is wrong. This creates tension between the two criminals, who then move against each other, allowing Gondorff's crew to profit from their mutual distrust.

Foreshadowing: The crew's plan specifically targets both criminals to ensure they conflict with each other.

  • lonnegan macalinski conflict
  • gangster rivalry
  • double cross
Q10

What is Hooker's role in the boxing con?

Jake Hooker serves as the frontman for the boxing con, posing as a mediocre boxer who is tired of throwing fights for Gondorff. His performance as a disillusioned fighter draws Macalinski's attention and convinces him to place large bets on the rigged outcome. This sets the trap that ensnares both gangsters.

Foreshadowing: Hooker's undercover work as a boxer is a key part of the initial setup to attract Macalinski.
