Badrinath Bansal, played by Varun Dhawan, hails from a wealthy family in Uttar Pradesh, where his strict father Amarnath, portrayed by Rituraj Singh, is on a quest to find the perfect bride for him. However, Badri resents the relentless matchmaking process his father orchestrates, which feels more like an auction than a loving search for a partner. Amarnath, with his narrow-mindedness, even prevents Badri’s educated sister-in-law Urmila, played by Shweta Basu Prasad, from pursuing a career, despite her aspirations. Badri’s elder brother, Alok, portrayed by Yash Sinha, had once been deeply in love with a girl named Sakshi but found his fate sealed by Amarnath’s decision to arrange his marriage with Urmila, leading Alok to leave home in protest. Yet, upon Amarnath faking a heart attack, Alok succumbs to pressure and complies with his father’s wishes, resulting in their subsequent family dynamics being steeped in obligation and regret.
The narrative takes a turn when Badri meets Vaidehi Tridevi, portrayed by Alia Bhatt, at a wedding, and immediately falls for her. However, her radical views as a staunch feminist and her disdain for dowry present challenges to their budding romance. Badri’s childhood friend, Somdev, adds to the story’s color, while Vaidehi’s past with a boy named Sagar complicates matters. Despite her unwavering support, Sagar betrays her trust, taking her father’s savings meant for a business venture and disappearing with her money. This loss triggers a health crisis for her father, and now the family’s focus shifts to figuring out how to secure dowries for Vaidehi and her elder sister, Kritika, played by Sukmani Lamba.
Determined, Badri asks Alok to present a marriage proposal to Amarnath, confident that Vaidehi’s family won’t refuse given their economic status. After some initial hesitation, Vaidehi relents due to pressure from her own family. She stipulates a condition: Badri must find a suitable groom for Kritika before their engagement can proceed. In a challenging endeavor, Badri finally locates Bhushan, played by Aparshakti Khurana, the son of a widely respected religious leader. Yet, as the wedding plans begin to solidify, Bhushan’s family demands a staggering dowry of Rs 25 Lakhs.
Just when Badri feels defeated, Urmila steps in, persuading Alok to discreetly withdraw funds from the family business to finance the dowries. With everything appearing perfect, the two weddings are set for the same day. However, on the night of the wedding, Vaidehi vanishes to Mumbai, aiming to carve her own path as an air hostess. Heartbroken, Badri faces additional turmoil when Kritika’s wedding hangs in the balance.
Amarnath demands Badri fetch Vaidehi back to assert control, leading him to track her down in Singapore, where she is undergoing air-hostess training. During a heated confrontation, the reality of their differences surfaces. The situation escalates when the local police intervene, only to find Vaidehi refusing to file charges against Badri, creating further tension between the two.
Despite their tumultuous encounters, as they share space in Singapore, Badri learns to adapt to Vaidehi’s lifestyle, finding joy in small domestic tasks while she surprises him with thoughtful gifts from her salary. Their budding relationship becomes strained when Badri, under his father’s commands, falsely claims he hasn’t located Vaidehi. Subsequently, as Badri returns to India, his father announces an arranged wedding for him.
In a dramatic turn of events, during a public function meant to celebrate this newfound engagement, Badri, fueled by his emotions and alcohol, reveals the entire truth about his love for Vaidehi, just as she makes a surprising entrance. The two finally confess their feelings amidst the stunned silence of their families, including a flabbergasted Amarnath.
Fast forward a year, life takes a heartwarming turn as Urmila welcomes twins, signifying a shift in Amarnath’s perspective on family dynamics. After spending two transformative years in Singapore, Vaidehi returns to Jhansi with aspirations of opening her own air-hostess training academy. Badri and Vaidehi emerge stronger and more committed than ever, ready to embrace a bright future together filled with love and mutual respect.
