At a bustling Chicago firehouse in the unforgettable year of 1971, two brothers, a spirited young boy and his even younger sibling, are excitedly trying on a fireman’s coat. The older brother, Steven McCaffrey, takes on a mentor role, imparting his wisdom—after all, he is preparing Brian to be a proper fireman. Their passion flames brightly as they join their father on one of his fire alarms, but the excursion turns into a heart-wrenching tragedy. Upon arriving at an apartment building engulfed in flames, they witness their father’s courage firsthand. As Steven and his partner, John “Axe” Adcox, valiantly rescue a child, danger looms close. A sudden gas line rupture leads to a catastrophic explosion that claim’s their father’s life, with Brian left stunned as he picks up his father’s helmet, an image that later becomes a poignant Life magazine cover.

Fast forward twenty years, and we find Brian celebrating his graduation from the firefighter training academy at a lively party. Whereas Tim is placed in the notoriously tough Engine 17, Brian manages to secure a different posting after pulling some strings with the city fire chief. His decision to avoid working at 17 is spurred by the tumultuous relationship he shares with his older brother, Steven, who now oversees that very company. The party also brings him face to face with his past love, Jennifer, who harbors resentment towards Brian for neglecting them all these years.

Unexpected chaos erupts when an unexpected explosion claims the life of a man named Seagrave, which sends Brian back to where his past and present collide. Arriving on the scene, he finds Steven and Axe reveling in their firefighting success amidst the carnage, while Brian is left grappling with ominous feelings about his estranged brother and the world of firefighting. However, their first call to a dressmaker’s factory quickly spirals out of control when the floor collapses, raising suspicions about perilous negligence. Tensions reach a boiling point when they face another fire emergency in a slum tenement, where Steven and Brian argue about their father’s legacy and the pressures of heroism.

Amidst the firefighting chaos, Brian’s journey of self-discovery leads him into the contentious world of arson investigation alongside Donald “Shadow” Rimgale. The investigation uncovers a sinister pattern linking several fire-related deaths, leading Brian to unravel a conspiracy orchestrated by local politicians, including Alderman Swayzak, that threatens the integrity of the fire department.

The nail-biting escalations toward the climax unfold as Brian puts the pieces together, linking the fires to a dangerous arsonist and ultimately suspecting his brother in a heart-wrenching twist.
