In 1995, Lyla Novacek, a talented cellist, is under strict supervision by her father. Studying at the prestigious Juilliard School, she struggles between her passion for music and her father's controlling nature.

During a rooftop party, Lyla crosses paths with Louis Connelly, the lead singer of an Irish rock band. Their mutual shyness gives way to a spontaneous connection, resulting in a passionate one-night stand.

Lyla's father discovers her relationship with Louis and forbids her from pursuing it further. The weight of his control severs their brief connection, leaving both heartbroken.

After a heated argument with her father about her life choices, Lyla discovers she is pregnant. This revelation shakes her to her core, complicating her future and relationship with her father.

Lyla is tragically hit by a car, resulting in a premature birth. While she lies unconscious, her father secretly arranges for their baby boy to be put up for adoption, misleading Lyla into believing her son has died.

Convinced of his destiny, Evan escapes to New York City to seek out his parents. As he embarks on this journey, he inadvertently loses contact with his social worker, further complicating his quest.

In Washington Square Park, Evan meets Arthur, a young street musician. Arthur introduces him to Wizard Wallace, a mentor who takes an interest in Evan's remarkable musical talent and begins to guide him.

Meanwhile, Louis Connelly, now a talent agent in San Francisco, feels a deep longing for Lyla. After ending a previous relationship, he decides to seek out Lyla in Chicago, unaware of the connection to their son.

Lyla receives devastating news at her father's bedside that her son is alive. This revelation ignites her determination to find Evan no matter the cost, leading her to search for him actively.

As Louis searches for Lyla, misunderstandings and coincidences lead him to New York, where he plans to reunite his band. Unknown to him, the paths of mother, son, and father are intertwining rapidly.

As tension escalates, social worker Jeffries grows suspicious of Wizard's mentorship. Authorities raid Wizard's refuge for street kids, forcing Evan to seek refuge in a nearby church.

In the church, Evan befriends a girl named Hope, who introduces him to the piano. Inspired, he develops a rhapsody that captures the attention of the church pastor, reigniting his love for music.

On the day of a critical concert, Evan, now dubbed August Rush, is set to perform his original concerto. However, Wizard attempts to manipulate him, leading to a series of events that threaten his performance.

As August conducts his much-anticipated rhapsody, Lyla and Louis unknowingly converge at the same performance. The emotional culmination leads to a heartfelt reunion, validating Evan's quest for family.
