In Marysville, Kansas, a paralyzed former singer, Jane, argues with her stuttering friend Joey about his belief that he can talk to the invisible world. During a physiotherapy session, he ransacks her house in search of a book about angels he lent her, and his behavior lands him in the hands of the police, who take him to a hospital while a frustrated Jane visits him.

That night, Joey escapes and returns to Jane’s house to clean up. He discovers a letter from her young son inviting her to his communion in Baton Rouge, where he lives with his adoptive family. Joey spends the night on the couch, torn between loyalty to his friend and the pull of a journey that could reconnect Jane to life beyond her paralysis.

The following morning, the police ask whether Joey is still at the house, but he has already departed. Joey pleads with Jane to join him in New Orleans, where an author who writes about angels is holding a conference. The road trip becomes a test of trust and endurance as mechanical trouble interrupts their plans: the engine overheats and the car explodes. They buy a new one, only for it to be stolen. They board a coach, and while Jane sleeps, Joey befriends Billie, helping her recover a wedding ring from the floor and learning about her missing husband who vanished without leaving an address. The trio dines at Billie’s sister’s house, sharing stories that hint at the fragility of ordinary life on the road.

The next morning, Jane forgets her purse in the car, and Joey hatches a plan to get everyone to the bus without paying. The plan falters, the bus driver abandons them in the middle of nowhere, and Jane decides to head back home. The next day Caldwell gives them a ride, and Jane agrees to replace a singer in a club’s lineup. Before the show, a tense conversation with Joey about how he has been “mothering” her pushes Jane away from the group, and she wanders off with fellow travelers heading toward Iowa. Their chance meeting with a compassionate traveler’s party inspires Jane to perform, and she reaches the stage just as Joey prays for her return. She sings This Land Is Your Land, backed by Caldwell on electric guitar, drawing thunderous applause from the audience.

As they press toward New Orleans, they glimpse their stolen car on the road and pursue the thieves. A reckless chase leads to an accident; everyone is arrested and later freed, except Caldwell, who is taken to prison. In a quiet moment of generosity, Jane gives Caldwell a song she wrote for him, celebrating the beauty of birds.

In New Orleans, Joey attends the angels conference only to uncover that the author is a racist and a fraud, despising his Black and Mexican readership. Angered and disillusioned, Joey confronts him and strikes him in the face, and the three travelers are expelled from the gathering.

They reach the train station and head toward Baton Rouge, where Billie receives a call suggesting her husband may be returning home. She leaves Jane and Joey behind at the station, choosing a new path for herself.

In Baton Rouge, as Jane approaches her son’s communion, she fears she might not recognize him seven years after her coma. Joey encourages her to sing, and when she does, the sound guides her toward her son—who steps forward, and the moment of recognition finally arrives.

Back in Kansas, a final scene unfolds by a lake. Jane and Joey sit together while her son and his adoptive family arrive for a visit. They share a quiet, hopeful moment as the three of them approach, hands joined, a testament to resilience, faith, and the tenuous ties that keep a family connected across distance and time.
