Rudy Donatello, a struggling musician and drag performer, meets Paul Fleiger, a closeted district attorney, in the gay nightclub Fabios in West Hollywood in 1979. The encounter hints at a potential connection despite Paul's concealed sexuality. Their meeting plants the seeds for an unlikely partnership.

Rudy returns to his apartment to find Marianna's 13-year-old son Marco left unsupervised. Disturbed by the neglect, he takes Marco to Paul's workplace to seek guidance. This marks the beginning of their attempt to protect Marco.

At Paul’s workplace, Paul grows anxious about their sudden appearance with Marco. He urges them to contact Family Services and avoids appearing there again. The tension foreshadows the longer custody battle to come.

Family Services officer Miss Martinez arrives and removes Marco from their care, placing him into a foster home. Rudy grapples with the fear that Marco will be separated from them. Paul’s role becomes more complex as he tries to shield them and maintain contact.

Marco struggles to adapt to his foster placement and escapes during the night, seeking the familiar presence of Rudy and Paul. The event underscores how unstable and inadequate the foster system can feel to a child with special needs. The two men resolve to do whatever it takes to keep him safe.

Paul visits Fabios and reconciles with Rudy, reigniting their partnership. On their way home they spot Marco wandering the streets, and they decide to take him in for the night. This act cements their commitment to caring for him as a family.

The next morning, landlord Blum harasses Rudy for unpaid rent, raising Rudy’s fear of police or social services reporting. He enlists Paul to help gain custody and they visit Marianna in prison, where she signs temporary guardianship papers. The plan hinges on a legal pretense to keep Marco in their care.

During court proceedings, Paul claims to be Marco’s cousin to satisfy the judge, and Meyerson grants them temporary custody. The win feels fragile, but it allows them to move Marco into their home. The court cautions that this is temporary and contingent on further evaluation.

A medical checkup reveals that Marco’s disability requires ongoing care and that his well-being would demand a long-term parenting arrangement. Undeterred, Paul and Rudy commit to improving his health, diet, and education. They enroll him in special education and begin shaping a more stable life.

Over the following year, Marco’s health and social skills improve as the trio celebrates Halloween, Christmas, and his fourteenth birthday. He affectionately terms Paul and Rudy as his 'two daddies' and the family grows closer. Paul earns a promotion, reinforcing their shared future.

District Attorney Wilson hosts a party at his home where Rudy’s and Paul’s relationship subtly becomes a point of contention. Wilson grows suspicious and terminates Monica, while reporting inaccuracies on their custody forms to the court. The children’s fate hangs in the balance as the legal fight intensifies.

The court condemns the couple for concealing their relationship when signing guardianship papers, but allows them to pursue sole custody while an investigation proceeds. Paul and Rudy hire Lonnie Washington to strengthen their case, and a new judge, Richard Resnick, permits limited visits to Marco pending hearings. The process becomes a drawn-out legal battle.

Marianna resurfaces, seeking reunification under legal guidance from the district attorney's office. The attempt fails, and Washington explains that gaining custody from Marianna is unlikely to succeed until Marco is older. The legal tug-of-war continues without resolution.

Marco is placed with Marianna in a new apartment, where he is ignored and starts wandering the streets. He dies under a bridge after three days, unable to find his way home. Paul and Rudy mourn and honor Marco with a final tribute performance, closing the circle of their long ordeal.
