Fighting Tommy Riley

Tommy Riley, portrayed by J. P. Davis, stands steadfast in a boxing ring, dressed in fighting gear, surrounded by the unremarkable walls of a dressing room. Suddenly, a voice reverberates from outside, asking, “Are you ready?” As the tension builds, we flash back seven months, where Tommy was a once-promising boxer whose Olympic aspirations slipped through his fingers.

Now, stuck in a mundane life, Tommy works by day laying computer cables and by night serves as a sparring partner at a local gym. His lack of ambition strains his relationship with his girlfriend, Stephanie, played by Christina Chambers, ultimately leading to their breakup.

At the same gym where Tommy trains, Marty, a former boxer turned high school teacher and boxing trainer/manager, played by Eddie Jones, enters the scene. His past is shadowed by disappointment; having previously coached a fighter who abandoned him just before a title shot. Along with his business partner, Diane, portrayed by Diane Tayler, they seek out fresh talent.

When Tommy enters the ring to spar and is ordered to make his opponent look good, an unexpected event occurs. After enduring a low blow, Tommy reacts with a powerful punch, knocking his rival down and inciting the wrath of the gym’s owner, who promptly expels him. However, Marty and Diane see something special in Tommy and offer him a chance to train under their mentorship.

As Tommy starts making a name for himself, the duo sets up a fight to showcase his talent. With each fight, Tommy’s confidence blossoms, leading him to victories that grab the attention of promoters, though the keen-eyed ones are unimpressed.

Diane then reveals an old tape of Tommy’s Olympic trial from 1999; it shows Tommy leading in the rounds but ultimately quitting due to a supposed hand injury. As Marty realizes the truth—that Tommy faked the injury out of frustration stemming from the abuse by his stepfather—he imparts an important lesson: boxing is a team sport, and no fighter should feel alone in the ring. This newfound perspective reignites Tommy’s passion for boxing and leads to a touching reconciliation with Stephanie.

Simultaneously, Leroy Kane, a formidable rival played by Don Wallace, prepares for his own title shot, leading Marty to cleverly set up a fight for Tommy against Kane. With only a month to prepare, Marty takes Tommy away to a cabin in the woods for focused training. There, an incident during a post-workout massage creates awkwardness, but they decide to move past it and return to the city, eager to implement their training.

On the night of the big fight, they devise a strategy to wear Kane down, aiming for a knockout blow in the seventh round. Their plan works beautifully, culminating in Tommy sending Kane tumbling to the canvas. Afterward, while celebrating, Tommy’s success catches the eye of promoter Bob Silver, portrayed by Paul Raci, who extends a tempting offer—a million-dollar contract with one stipulation: Tommy must sever ties with Marty.

Despite Diane and Marty advising acceptance, Tommy staunchly refuses to abandon his mentor, leading to friction with Stephanie, further straining their relationship. As the pressures mount, tensions peak between Tommy and Marty, leading to a series of confrontations filled with neglect and aggression. Marty’s physical outburst unsettles Tommy, prompting him to retaliate and assert that he won’t tolerate further abuse.

After some emotional turmoil, Tommy feels he must apologize and express his unwavering resolve to remain in Marty’s life. However, Marty is unmoved, leading to a dramatic unraveling between them that culminates in a devastating discovery. The next day, along with Diane, Tommy finds Marty’s lifeless body—the tragic result of an overdose—bringing the harsh reality of their lives crashing down.

As news spreads about Marty’s death, Tommy reaches out to Stephanie, grappling with his emotions. The film echoes back to its opening moment, where Tommy is engulfed in grief, but a glimmer of determination strikes as he catches a glimpse of his reflection, hinting at Marty’s enduring presence in his life. Dressed in Marty’s iconic ring gear, Tommy steels himself for his upcoming fight, embodying the spirit of his fallen mentor while embracing his own resolve for the future.
