In 1979 West Hollywood, at the lively gay nightclub Fabios, a struggling musician and drag performer named Rudy Donatello pursues his art and his sense of belonging. It’s here that he crosses paths with Paul Fleiger, a district attorney who keeps a closeted life under wraps as he navigates the demands of his job and his own private desires. The chance meeting sparks a complicated, fragile bond born from shared vulnerability, set against a backdrop of a city pushing the boundaries of acceptance and the law.
Life at home soon tests Rudy in a way no stage performance ever has. Returning from a night spent performing and hustling for gigs, Rudy discovers his junkie neighbor, Marianna, has left her thirteen-year-old son, Marco, unattended. Marco has Down syndrome, and the weight of his care rests unusually heavy on Rudy’s shoulders as he grapples with the responsibility of a child who is not his own. The situation becomes more urgent the next morning when Rudy writes down a dispute with his landlord, Mr. Blum, and realizes Marianna has not returned. In a bid to do right by Marco, Rudy takes him to Paul’s workplace seeking guidance. What begins as a practical attempt to find help spirals into a tense moment: Paul grows anxious at the sudden appearance of the two and insists that they contact Family Services and that they stay away from his life. Rudy, driven by worry and a fear that Marco could be removed from his care, accuses Paul of neglecting them, suspecting that his colleagues may be right in assuming that he is gay and possibly pushing him toward a harsher judgment.
When the couple returns to their apartment, a relentless Family Services officer, Miss Martinez, moves to place Marco into a foster home. The boy struggles to adjust, and in a moment of defiance slips away into the night, seeking the sense of home that seems to be slipping through Rudy’s fingers. Paul, who has begun to see the depths of Rudy’s commitment, returns to Fabios and seeks to mend the rift between them. The two men decide to shelter Marco for a night, hoping to stabilize his sense of security and determine their next steps. The following morning sets a new tone for their life together: Marco wakes to the sight of Rudy and Paul sharing a quiet moment, and a bond forms between Marco and his would-be guardians.
The next challenge arrives as Blum reappears at the door, again pressing for rent and threatening to call Family Services if they persist in keeping Marco. Rudy, feeling the pressure of losing custody, turns again to Paul for help. They visit Marianna in prison and vow to look after Marco if she signs guardianship documents, though Paul makes it clear that their relationship is not a romantic one, claiming they are merely cousins in a transparent attempt to smooth the legal process. Marianna, who suspects their intimate connection, eventually signs temporary guardianship papers. In court, Paul tells Judge Meyerson that he and Rudy are cousins, a claim sufficient to grant them temporary custody while the matter is investigated. The judge agrees, and the trio moves into a shared home, marking a fresh chapter in their unconventional family arrangement.
From the outset, the doctors’ assessment makes it clear that Marco’s disability will require lifelong care. Undeterred, the trio puts in the work: they improve Marco’s health and diet, enroll him in a special education program, and witness tangible improvements in his social and cognitive development. The holidays—Halloween, Christmas, and Marco’s fourteenth birthday—become milestones in which Marco openly refers to his guardians as his “two daddies,” a testament to the stability he’s finally found. Paul earns a promotion at the District Attorney’s office, and both he and Marco support Rudy’s dream of becoming a professional singer, encouraging him to keep chasing his onstage persona even as they navigate the pressures of family life.
Intrigue and risk soon enter from another direction. District Attorney Wilson invites the trio to a party at his home to learn more about their relationship. Rudy’s temper flares when Paul continues to refer to him as a “cousin” who has a child, and the sight of Wilson’s suspicion unsettles everyone. Monica, Paul’s secretary, notices the strain and tries to diffuse it by flirting with Wilson, while Rudy grows increasingly wary that the truth about their relationship will come to light. The fear of exposure intensifies when Wilson fires Monica and Paul and starts to file allegations—real or imagined—about the couple’s guardianship and the potential for inappropriate influence in Marco’s life. Family Services steps in again, removing Marco from their care as Rudy is arrested for attempting to physically block the removal.
Paul bails Rudy out and urges him to leave his drag performance behind, hoping that a quieter life might persuade the court to overturn the decision. Judge Meyerson condemns their failure to disclose the full truth about their relationship when they signed the guardianship papers, yet she grants them the opportunity to apply for sole custody pending a formal investigation into Marco’s living situation. The DA’s office counters with sharp accusations, questioning the ethics of same-sex adoption and suggesting a risk to Marco’s welfare. Yet Marco himself testifies that he was treated well and expresses a clear wish to live with Rudy and Paul, and the couple insists they have shown him the real joy of parenting.
After a positive home evaluation, it seems they might win back custody, but a new wrench is thrown into the gears when Marianna reappears—now out of prison—and pursues reunification with Marco under the district attorney’s legal guidance. The law is complicated, and Washington, the family’s attorney, warns that the fight may be unwinnable while Marianna remains active in Marco’s life. Judge Resnick later agrees to limit their visits to a single encounter before the upcoming hearing, highlighting how precarious Marco’s situation has become. The boy’s weight loss and signs of depression deepen the concern that his welfare is at risk as the case unfolds.
As the legal battle stalls, the harsh reality of Marco’s living situation grows clearer. Marianna moves into a new apartment, where she and her boyfriend treat Marco with visible disdain and neglect. He is ignored when he asks for attention, and his environment becomes unstable and unsafe. He begins to wander the streets in search of the home that once felt possible with Rudy and Paul. The family, desperate to change his fate, drafts letters to the court and the district attorney, attaching a small newspaper article to explain Marco’s troubling trajectory. The heartbreaking conclusion arrives when Marco dies under a bridge after three days of wandering, unable to find his way “home.” The news devastates Paul and Rudy deeply, and in the wake of this tragedy, Paul watches Rudy perform a somber, aching rendition of I Shall Be Released as a tribute to Marco, a final act of love for a child whose life was shaped by the complexities of chosen family, legal peril, and a city wrestling with acceptance, justice, and the longing to belong.
