Angels in Disguise

Sach Jones and Slip Mahoney learn that two local police officers, including their friend Gabe, have been shot while stopping a robbery. Gabe survives, but his partner is killed, prompting the men to pursue the culprit. They decide to go after the gangster behind the crime, a member of the Loop Gang from Chicago. They resolve to go undercover to infiltrate the mob and expose him.

With the newsroom behind them, editor Joe Cobb grants the go-ahead for the investigation. Sach and Slip decide to infiltrate the mob rather than report from the outside, hoping to gather solid evidence. They plan to use their access as copy boys to move closer to the gang and its leaders.

The pair run into two Loop Gang members and manage to befriend them, which opens the door to meeting their elusive boss, Angles Carson. Angles takes a liking to the boys and begins involving them in the gang’s affairs. The relationship marks the start of their undercover mission.

A cartoonist named Lowell at the Chronicle informs Carver that the police are heading their way. The warning intensifies the urgency behind Carver’s actions and puts pressure on the Loop Gang to move quickly. The informant within the Chronicle becomes a critical loose end.

Slip and Sach engage in a brutal showdown with Loop Gang members. They are badly beaten and end up being rushed to the hospital for treatment. The confrontation marks the physical toll of their undercover mission and raises the stakes for their personal safety.

In the hospital, Sach requests care for himself while a male nurse arrives to assist. He intends to send the nurse to Slip, but just as he is about to walk out, a female nurse arrives and takes over massaging Slip’s back. The moment blends danger with a hint of relief as care arrives for both boys.
